$300 for drum mics

Our drummer wants to get his own mics (I'm happy) but only wants to put $300 into them (I'm sad). Believe me, if I could get him to double or triple that number I would, but 300 is pushing it for him. I've seen some of these little mic kits for drums, but really don't know if they're shit or what.

Bruce, I just read your 1K setup suggestion, but that's obviously out of his range. This guy only turns his heat on when he has company, and returned a sweet Micron notebook his company gave him because he didn't think it could do any better than his yellow legal pads and telephone. Get it?

hmm... so he returned his notebook and got no money? sounds like hes not the sharpest tool in the box. anyway.. $300? buy two condensors for overhead, and reap the benefits of an open kit sound. or buy a bunch of cheap small ones, and close mic. or do whatever. ummm.. $300 isnt really enough. BUT, if you combned it with the 57s you already have for your guitars, right? you have other mics? or you guys could buy $300 of jack daniels and get so drunk you die, then you wouldnt have to worry about recording.

Tell him he's either going to pay for it now, or he'll pay for it later... He buys cheap mics now - he'll be real disappointed with the sound and then he'll have to shell out for the $1K+ solution - essentially wasting the money he spent on the cheap stuff!!!

He may not like that answer - but they are essentially the facts! You could try Kristian's suggestion of a condenser and using it as a "overall" kit mic, but that's notoriously difficult to work with (but not impossible) - even so, you may have trouble on mixdown without having the flexibility of separate drum tracks...

He returned the notebook to his company - told them he didn't want it. I just about shit when he told me. Every dime he makes goes into IRA's, 401K's, various other acronyms, and sports paraphenalia. I've been using a 57, C1000s, and two shitty RS condensers on him up to this point with good results (I used to be a minimalist until I started frequenting this site), but he wants a bigger, cleaner sound. I'll keep working on his wallet

hmm

sounds like you have a fine set up so far. ive heard VERY good work done with c1000s. so keep those. and keep your 57. and with the $300... well, get another 3 57s.
 
Used at local music stores you can usually find sm57's for $50-60 apiece. That would leave some $$ left for a decent kick drum mic.
