G'day chaps,

Anybody fancy a crack at slagging our first time song demo. It is called
"Sometimes" and can be found at

http://www.nowhereradio.com/artists/?aid=4141/singles

Basically it is a gig demo recording, as we know its pretty rough.
Advice on guitar sounds, vocals very much appreciated.

be as honest as you like, I have tough skin.

Cheers.

I'll I can get is an 80k mp3, and it sounds terrible. Can you encode it at 128 atleast?

Thanks.

apologies for the 80k file, I will get a better version up there soon

I like the tune Collie but ya need to do a studio recording of that song! (I want to hear it clearer and cleaner) :)

A very nice Tom Petty Vibe!

However, there's some "ringing" going on through the song. (very apparent in the lead part and thereafter) What is that ringing? It sounds like an old telephone or something.

As it was a live recording you should have left in some crowd cheering at the end of the tune. At the very least.. maybe dubbed in a sample of people cheering. After listening to the song live I was waiting for a crowd cheer at the end then it just stopped...abruptly.

Nice song, good sounding guitars, good vocals. You guys need to hit the studio to make a clean recording though. :)

af,

thanks for the response on the song.

it is actually not a live recording, I probably used a bit too much reverb here and there to make it sound live. Recorded drums seperate but everything else is done on my computer using Adobe Audition but using good Waves plug-ins to try and get a decent sound.

Acoustic/electric/bass recorded direct through behringer UB802 into USB maudio 24/96 external soundcard.

Cannot understand what the ringing is?! Probably some of the quality got lost when converting to a lower mp3 format..

i am trying to get the recording cleaner and will repost when have done so.

cheers.

Well, the better mp3 helped, but it still is VERY muddy sounding. Maybe way too much reverb? The snare sounds real distant. If it were me, I'd remix with little or no reverb.

On the positive side, the song itself sounds good.

Hope that helps,

NL5

Aye! Post a new version of the song without reverb. I think the overuse of reverb may have contributed to the ringing that I was hearing. :)

Edit : Hey! I just re-checked the music and it sounds better! I think the ringing I'm hearing is a pang cymbal of some sort. I hear alot of it through the lead guitar part.

I'm not positive but I think there is a little too much compression in some areas... maybe the drums? My Jedi knight powers also sense some clipping and overuse of a really bad chorus on the guitars. I love this song! I'm just trying to figure out why you are clipping the nuts off the wallabee! ;)

Lots of potential there! Man.. if I could only get your tracks and mix them myself... you would have a smash hit!

cheers AF and NL5 for the good critical feedback. Its my first time at mastering and it obviously shows..

I did put chorus on the guitars and have overdone it by the sounds of it.
I have compressed the drums quite a lot as we used a yamaha electronic kit which needed compressed to get the kick a bit meatier. All the drums were recorded on one stereo track, so we don't have much leeway that side of things.

I will try and get a cleaner sounding mix done and try and eq the cymbals down a bit.

After reading all the posts for the last 6 months, I should realise that LESS IS MORE....

Reagrds.

Collie,

Ok.. I listened to your song a couple more times. (Actually, I've downloaded it for keeps)

I usually give new music 15-30 seconds and if it doesn't hook me and get my mind working on various potentials I hit the stop button. Even though your mix could be considered a little peakish and harsh, the music and vocals have got me punishing myself on repeated listens just to hear the tune. :) (Well, I've cut the highs on my EQ a little bit while listening so that helped a little)

You could smooth things out a little more and practice on your mastering but I'd suggest you and your band write/record more music and develop a large catalog. The professionals usually say that you can either be a great musician or a great mixing/mastering engineer but you can't do both. (There just isn't enough time)

Who is the vocalist on your song? Whoever that guy is.. don't boot him out of the band! You guys are sunk if you lose the vocalist.

AF,

Thanks again for the response.

We actaully have around 12 songs that we plan to get mixed and mastered eventually.

I have reposted the song again, only much drier with no reverb on drums and no chorus on guitars. Let me know what you think.

Our singer will be pleased with your comments!!

Hey there,

I'm receiving an error when trying to listen. (It locks with the error as soon as I click to listen)

Me too!

Nowhere radio seems to be hit or miss.

Sometimes it works, sometimes it don't.
