I know this subject's been covered before, but from the searches I've done, I still can't get a definitive answer.
So I just got a 3rd drive (Circuit City has WD 80GB 8MB buffer 7200RPM's for $20 after rebate). I would like to use the new drive for disk streaming samples. What's the best setup with 2 IDE channels?

Primary:
Master: O/S, apps
Slave: DVD combo

Secondary:
Master: Audio
Slave: Samples

I've heard that optical drives slow down both devices on a channel, because the channel is only as fast as the slowest device. Others are saying that, with new chipsets, this isn't true anymore. Still others say it's true, but only if you are using the optical drive, otherwise when it's on standby, HD read speed is not affected. Thanks for the help.

Hey!

Mines setup the first way... Nice and speedy, never a glitch!

Personally, I would go with the second way. Realistically, you may not see any difference between the two:)
