Slowing becoming un-noob.
I have a 2x12 avatar cab with vintage 30's. Wanting to make 2 1x12 cabs with one v30 in each...

So tell me. What would be wrong with this?
When I have an 8ohm 2x12 cab, does that mean each speaker is 4 ohm? or...
Is this just a bad idea in general? or....

I'm just curious. 2x12 is just hard to lug around and fit well with other things in my car. 2 1x12 cabs would be lots easier to find spots for.
Just curious.

Thanks guys.

Nothing at all wrong with it. You could even do a half stack with four 1 X 12s.

If your 2 X 12 cab is 8 ohms, you either have two 16 ohm speakers in parallel or two 4 ohm speakers in series. Place an ohmmeter across the terminals of one of the speakers to find out. The DC resistance of the speaker is lower than the nominal active impedance - an 8-ohm speaker wll typically measure around 6 ohms DC. You can wire the 1 X 12 boxes so that when you daisy-chain them they maintain the same wiring, and if you use only one of them you just need to make sure that the impedance selector on your amp is set accordingly.

The only disadvantage to making individual cabs as far as I can see is that your overall weight is higher and then there's the effort of constructing multiple cabs.

I had a similiar trhead not long ago and i can tell you a little about my experience.

In my case, one 1 x 12 is open backed and the other an avatar closed back 1 x 12, these are connected in series. My setup is really AMP-> Attenuator -> cab 1 -> Cab 2

I am really pleased so far. Both cabs have their own unique tone, the open back has more of a chimey sound to it, while the closed back is more punchy. I can spread them out a bit and aim them in diff directions, helpful for monitoring purposes when playing with others. Overall, i really like the flexibility, and I don't think there would be an advantage to a 2 x12 other than space, perhaps.

Definately make your 1 x 12s have the option to go open or closed and you will have soe great options for different venues and styles to experiment with.

Excellent post, Daav. I was thinking the same, that you could build your cabs with the open/closed option, and get the benefits of both.
