I heard that a lot of people have a second computer which serves as MIDI machine only. How does that work, how can I synchronize that with the recording computer and what's the benefit? Thanks for the enlightment

It's true 
Computer running certain programs can be used as MIDI synth / sampler (Eg. Giga studio, etc). However, these programs usualy using CPU's power to it's limit. Power, disks & memory hog. That's why some people tend to put them on separate machine.
