2496 sound issues

i dont know if this is in the right forum and frankly could care less. i want to start recording . i have a 2496, a phantom powered samson condenser, a studio v3 preamp, sennheiser hd 280s, and quite a bit of cables and adapters...

ok my mic is plugged into my pre and it (mic) recieves power. the output of the pre is plugged into a 1/4 to rca adapter and then plugged into the left in of the 2496. i can hear myself in the headphones, but only the left ear....i know why..but how can i get stereo or even 2 mono signals in the phones, the 2496 only has rca, and the headphones have a 1/8 or 1/4 male end. i want to hear both ears...how can i get it?
 
The Audiophile's RCA outs are line-level outputs. You need to bring them to a mixer or a stereo receiver and then attach phones to that.

As for the recording, if you record to a mono track in whatever software you use, this should be panned to the center, so it will come out of the left and right outs equally.
 
I believe if you go to the M-Audio Applet and set up your monitor mixer correctly, there is a small pan slider at the bottom of the hardware in 1 or 2 (whichever you are using) that allows you to center the signal in your headphones.
But you DO have to run both outputs to a set up with a headphone amp, otherwise how will you have any power to drive the headphones? The audio card does not put out a sufficient output to proprly drive headphones. For starters you could use an old stereo receiver.

got it yesterday, but thanks anyway, the pre has an xlr out and a 1/4 out so i hokked both those up to the 2496, sloppy but works.
