2488 panning problem

Tried to pan a couple of overhead drum mic's without sucess
I went to the pan menu and selected the inputs, c and d, which I was using and panned them hard left and right, but I was still getting the sound thru both speakers. Any ideas what I may have overlooked??

Last night I tried again and it worked perfect Here's what was different. This time I panned after hitting the select buttons. The first time I was still in the a,b,c,d... input stuff. Hope this will be of use to someone else.
I don't know why the panning feature would even be programed into the input section if it can't be used??
