244 playback volume on High bias tapes...

Let me start by saying how great this site is. I've learned so much from just reading all these posts. I fixed up a 244 that I recently bought (replaced the capstan belt, Idle rollers, cleaned the pots) and It seems to be working quite well. I didn't know it would be so easy.

Now on to my problem. I've been using type 1 normal bias tapes but I've read that it's better to use the type II high bias (less noise, less deterioration, etc.) I bought some new Maxell XL II tapes but the funny thing is, when I playback the tracks after recording there seems to be a waver in the volume , It swells and then fades (almost a mild tremolo) . I've tried a few different tapes of the same brand (It's the only brand I can find) but they all do this. It doesn't happen on the Fuji normal bias tapes though.

Has anyone else experienced this or know what's going on?
Is it just the type of tape or is there a problem with my machine?

i've experienced this but only with a used type II tape,so order a different brand (fuji,tdk,sony) via internet,I've never had problems with those

thanks for the feedback. I've found that if i just fast forward the maxell xlII a little ways and the start recording it sounds fine. For some reason it's only at the beginning of the tapes.
