i mean if i'm recording into a mic through a mixer into my computer, via cubase, is that analog info or digital? if it is analog then can that be where my problems lay? if it's digital then back to the drawing board. the programs won't let me select 24/96 with analog in being my recording source.

It will help a lot if you mention what kind of soundcard (brand/type) your are using.

Recording s/w doesn't work with analog signals -- it reads digital data off the digital I/O from your soundcard.... if your soundcard accepts analog inputs, it has an A/D converter on-board to convert the analog signal to digital.
On the card, you have to specify what resolution/word-size you wish to use. Then you have to set the recording s/w to the same values.

I think I see where the confusion lies here...
On a soundcard with analog and digital inputs, it is common to refer to the analog ports as "analog", even though as bruce said, they are inputs into an A/D converter and what you end up with is of course digital.
It is typical on most soundcards to be able to choose 24/96 on both the analog (A/D) and digital inputs, however it's not a standard by any means. It is certainly possible to have a soundcard that can do 24/96 SPDIF but only have 16/44.1 AD converters.
That said, what soundcard do you have man!?
One common problem some people have when going to 24bit is selecting the proper word structure. For instance, if your soundcard uses a 24bit unpacked left unjustified format, then you have to set your software accordingly.

While it will handle digital I/O at 24/96... the A/D converter used for the analog input is limited to 24-bit/48K sampling.
So you CANNOT use 24/96 mode in the recording s/w, the card itself is limiting you to 24/48...........
You would need a better soundcard with A/D converters capable of 24/96 resolution....
MOTU, RME all have excellent solutions...!

I assume the Delta 44 AD/DA converters allow recording in 24/96?

In the second lot of points is says "All data paths support up to 24-bit/96kHz performance"... just want to confirm, in relation to this thread, that the Delta 44 can record in 24/96 (I'm going to be going out from a Triton into the soundcard).

Whoa there, the lynx is one of the best sounding cards on the market. There would be no reason to trade it for anything but the lynx two. A card that can do 96khz will not necessarily sound better than a card that can only do 48khz. The lynx at 24/48 would be better than the delta at 24/96!!!

kylla, yes, the delta44 is a 24/96 card. It has 4 1/4" balanced inputs and 4 1/4" balanced outputs. It's the same thing as the Delta66, just without SPDIF.

okay i'm feeling good about this card again. i'm trying not to fall into this i need the next best thing now syndrome. i want to take my time with the good stuff and appreciate the better stuff. ooh is it hard to do, i want that million dollar sound now. but when i get it, what will i have to live for?
