WHat will happen if you play a 24/96 files but your soundcard is only capable of playing up to 16/48?
Would it sounds better than normal 16/48 files? or sound very crappy? or sound just like a 16/48?

Also, is the audio playback for m-audio 2496 24bit/96khz?
(the spec never say anything about audio playback...)

Depends on the soundcard and the s/w. S/W generally won't even play sample rates and formats that it doesn't support.

As for a soundcard - if you send a digital signal through them that is higher resolution than the card allows, the pitch will be off (if it's a different sample rate) and the word-size will get badly truncated, corrupting the digital audio in the process.
