Currently I'm tracking through onboard sound. I really need a compressor but I also really need a good sound card. For now, I can only get one. I have read that with a 24/96 soundcard, alot less compression is needed to tame peaks while tracking due to the greater dynamic range, as opposed to tracking through 16/44 sound. My question is, could I get a 24/96 card and get by without a compressor for now? I'm tracking mostly acoustic guitar and vocals. Or, should I get a compressor now and get a 24 bit card later. What would you do?

Damn Trav wish I could help ya here. But...I can't, so I won't. WTF does compression do neway? Sqeeze the sound? Why (if thats what it does) would you want to do that?

An example use of a compressor would be.........you're recording a vocal, and every now and then a loud note causes the signal to clip/distort. Instead of just turning down the mic gain and losing overall volume, you use a compressor to limit how loud the signal can get. So, your overall signal is still the same volume but the compressor pulls down any parts that get too loud. See what I mean?

Lmao I knew that too. omg. When I read the manual for the 3630. My bad! I must start thinking before I post I'm making myself look bad. Also making people waste thier hard earned time to write feedback.
