Can someone reccommend a low cost LD condensor that does'nt sound dark? I need something for vocals and would also like something farely versatile to maybe mic acoustic guitar and a guitar amp. My budget is $200-$300 but less would give me more money toward other gear. My only mic at the moment is a MXL990 and it's not working for my voice.

Shure KSM 27

It does a decent job on vox and guitars... and a few other things.

Try it out

Not dark? AT 4033 or 4040 ... Studio Projects C1 or Marshall mxl-2003. Any of the Rode condensers.

Some bright mics there. Surprized you don't like the 990.

Studio Projects B1 or B3 (if you want multible patterns).

thank you all for the suggestions. I'm not saying I don't like the 990, and even though I'm pretty new to all of this, I can tell it's not working on my voice. what are the multiple patterns for?

I'm thinking the c1 or mxl 2003 so I will have some cash left to get a dmp-3 and send this audiobuddy back. from what I've heard on the board, the c1 seems to be more versatile and the mxl 2003 is probably a little better for vocals. any opinions on that?

Are you kidding? There are plenty of opinions on that. LMAO!
I like it. I don't use it anymore, but at that price point, it's good. Put me down for a plus! Check out ADK as well.

ok, I may be looking for the wrong thing altogether, I'm really not sure. from as far as I can tell, my voice has an absence in mids/highs and i sing alot of stuff at low volume. I'm thinking that a brighter mic would be better suited for me than a darker one. if anyone could fill me in.......

I've always found the 990 to be pretty bright and hyped in the high end.....

when I do vocals with the 990, it sounds flat. I tried differenct placements from 6"-12". maybe it's my preamp (audiobuddy)? also when trying to mic my guitar amp at moderate volume, it sounds like it's distorting. has anyone tried the 990 on an amp? did it distort?

Try the C1, it has worked very nicely for me on voices similar to what you are describing

thanks for the replies......I think I'm gonna get a b1 or c1 in a couple weeks but I just blew my cash on some wharfedale 8.2a's and a 1010LT soundcard......right now I'm monitoring through edirol 10dbk's and onboard sound and I'm not diggin it at all.
