Thats a pretty cool project idea. So what's the catch? They must have relatively high self noise or something. I dont like the requirement for special power supply. I prefer phantom power. I might look around for some other "roll your own" mic projects. Seems to me a better metal housing would be preferred - or maybe gut a pair of dirt cheap RS mics.

This is not the same kind of capsule that the ECM8000 uses?

I like the idea of trying to build a few DI's from the socket boxes. Need to look for circuit ideas for that too...

Nearly 2 weeks of home time coming....Happy Holidays to All!

Has anyone tried this schematic? I did my first microphone circuit with a different capsule and have it using phantom power. It sounds fairly decent. Seems if this circuit sounds alright it'd be a great time/effort investment to create a bit more complex circuit for allowing use of phantom power and adding in some filtering.

yes, as a matter of fact. mshilarious built a business around it:

Ah, I figured that the MSHs were based on it but haven't yet gotten one to see the insides. Neat!

...and just in case you're wondering who Joel Cameron is, here's his latest venture:

...incredible summing buss boards based on vintage Neve circuits (iron in/iron out)...

...Joel rebuilt/restored a Neve 1290 pre for me and he sold me one of his personal Royer-style modded MXL 2001 mics...he's a very talented musician/producer as well as a respected sound technician...great guy! (IMO)...just thought I'd give him some props...;)
