I have been searching for a good china for a long time... and i found it... the 20" Paiste Signature Thin China... problem is its $300. So on ebay I found a SOund Formula 20" Thin China for $150 (mint condition). Shud i take this chance and grab it while it lasts? DO they sound similar? I want a dark, low china sound...

Check the Logo First!

If it's "Round" make sure it's a Sound FORMULA, and Not a "Sound Creation".

If it looks like the one I'm posting, then Grab it for sure, as these are newer. These were discontinued - people didn't seem to understand what they were.
I have several Signature series SF's and I personally like them much better than the Signature line.

I support Wuhans! Get a Wuhan. Very inexpensive and great sounding!

its the round logo DAMN. o well...

Go look at it again - Just because it's round doesn't mean it's bad. Just make sure that it's a Sound Formula and not a Sound Creation.... The Creations were really for Jazz, and they broke reallyu easily - sounded great, but extra thin....of course, that being the case you might just like it since you're after a dark cymbal. :D

It just wouldn't hold up to most Hard Rock/Metal playing.

I personally like really "trashy" china types. I didn't care for the Signature models becauise to me they were too "clean" sounding, where the 2002 China types sound more like a Wuhan....just really nasty and explosive.

My current china (a Paiste 3000 18" Novo China) is really trashy and bright, but i want soemthing more musical and dark to have more of a variety. The coolest china cymbal is the 2002 24" Novo China, but thats custom order, and costs a fortune. Thats one of the reasons I don't want a Wuhan... I'm looking for soemthing more musical.

If its good enough for Peart, its good enough for me. Wuhan knows more about China types than any European or American company. I've had Zildjian, Paiste and Sabian China types and Wuhan sounds most authentic.

Very musical indeed!!

Staggs chinas are nice too. I've havent heard wuhans yet personally. But i've been told good things.

OK I dont want a Wuhan or a Stagg or anything... The point is that I really want the 20" Signature Thin China, its one of the best chinas I've heard. I'm asking if the SOund Formula 20" Thin China would sound like the SIgnature one. The seller says that its either 602 or signature bronze alloy, hes not sure, but probably 602.

Actually, It doesn't really look much like signature alloy, or 2002. I think its 602 alloy.

It doesn't look like 602.
602 was real "silvery" looking because it had a higher Silver, Nickel, and Tin content in it - they became very expensive in the 70's, so they focused on the 2002's.

That cymbal looks more like a 2002 to me - it has that classic "coppery" 2002 appearance. I went to E-bay and looked at it.

If you're going to spend that much on one, You might as well get the real deal. I'm PM'ing you with a place that has your cymbal.

Sabian!

Go to the www.sabian.com. I play all Sabians for years and haven't stopped liking them. I use three Sabian Chinas with my setup because they're so amazing! If you want a dark, melodic, trashy, yet controlled china sound, my favorite is: Sabian AAX 18" Chinese. Or go 20" for more volume.

P.s. You can listen to every single cymbal Sabian manufacters on the website, sizes, even sounds of each being choked, chicked, the bell and bow for the rides, and a small performance using just that cymbal. There are also detailed descriptions for each.

Good luck!

Sry, the only Sabian China I have evr really liked was the Paragon 19"... Thanks for the opinion, but I still have my hert set on the Paiste 20" Signatrue Thin China...

I just went on the Sabian website... and... not really what I'm looking for. I'm still in love with that 20" Paiste thin china
