never heard of 797.. they seem to be knockoffs.. are they?

Yes, the Chinese company 797 Audio makes microphones similar to those made by other companies. They also are the manufacturing partner for the Studio Projects line of microphones, which are made to Studio Projects' specifications.

I can certainly vouch for Weston Ray's honesty and integrity, so if you have any questions about the mics he's offering, you might want to write to him directly with any other questions you have.

Sincerely,

Mark H.

Mark,

Thank You.
And I couldn't have answered any better!

Mark, by the way, I never did email telling you the payment to Hayne from the 924 was quite a "day brightener" for him! I would like to Thank You again for your help with that! Oh, and you GOTTA tell me how the TB-6 is working for ya!

Weston

If anyone has contacted me about these mics and has not gotten a response from me, please email me again. I noticed an email in regards to these mics in my Junk Folder. I thought I had moved it to my Inbox, but I couldn't seem to find it when I went to reply.

Thanks,
Weston

A Picture Of The CR998

Here's a picture of the CR998. Let me know if you care to see it's "insides" and I can email them to you.

Mark H,

From memory, 797 Audio, now manufacture exclusively for Studio Projects and RODE, who they still supply with components (capsules).

I know Alan Hyatt of PMI Audio had mentioned quite awhile ago, that was eventually going to happen, but has that already happened? That woud mean the ADK A-51TC & A-51TT and MXL V77 & 2003 (and probably others) are being made elsewhere now; which would more than likely be one of the manufacturers in Shanghai. Which in that case, I no longer recommend those mics...

RE,

I'll confirm that info and post here when I know for certain.........(but I'm sure that it is already the case).

ChrisO

Phew!!!

After one missing email and other obstacles I finally get back here.......lmao.

It appears that my last statement about 797 is correct. Anyone else (apart from RODE), who approaches them for mics, etc., is referred to PMI Audio. Unless of course they are doing "backdoor" deals, which I strongly doubt.

Other "manufacturers" (MXL, ADK, Apex, etc., etc.,) must be sourcing from companies in southern China or elsewhere, but are remaining tight lipped about it. Sounds a bit like Shure.............oooopppssss, did I say that:D :D

Halllke!!!

Hot diggity dog!!!

I gosta keep that one mind!!!

Not sure if I should be recommending the MXL V77 and 2003 anymore then! I know Marshall does their own QC on their mics, but I wonder how close the V77 and 2003 sound as they use to sound while 797 Audio was making them. Hmmm...

I never recommended ADK in the first place as they were always too pricey considering you could get the same thing with a different brand slapped on or considering other options out there.

Apex, etc., etc. always had bad QC anyway, so nothing has changed much there...

Any chance we know if 797 Audio will sell their branded mics anymore? I heard they weregoing to stop "for now" and focus on the little bit of OEM stuff they decided to keep, but I never heard if that happened either.

In any case, still got this 797 Audio CR998! :D

Thank You ausrock for the info!!!

Yeah... I always kinda wondered about that line... I noticed they are following SPA (like 797 Audio at least) and was the first (to my knowledge at least, Neumann says even 3 is not stable; which to me means they can't get it stable) to brake that 3 micron mark (other than SPA, and because of SPA, of course) and now they're weighing in at 2.5 microns! Their 32 model Shure sounds good though!

Have to say though... There's still nothing like an 3 micron SPA U87!!!

Hmmm... Maybe we should post an edited version of this in the Mic Forum...
