this cheap upright bass has a transducer/pickup and sounds close to any electric upright bass. see/hear it played here http://geocities.com/washtubbass/cardboardbass.html

I hereby decree that this thread gets a waiver of the spam rules because it's too effing cool no matter how much it aggravates my G.A.S.

If that's okay with you, of course, Dragon! :D

I agree about the waiver.

Only thing, I got a little pissed about was that I saw an ad for one for $70on Craig's list, Dallas, and though I'd save some shipping charges and assembly time. Turns out he was spamming craigslist and it wasn't a local ad.

But the bass is way too cool to get too mad about it.

aye, i am what i am

yes, i admit to be "The Craigslist Spammer",
my only defense is that its difficult to get noticed without spending advertizing dollars that i dont have. I'm not going to get rich from making cardboard box 2-string upright basses, It's just the most fun i've ever had in music. But one thing i've learned is that it seems that the more controversy surrounds the box bass, the more news press i get, and that translates into sales. So it's a good thing for the Craigslist community to trash my name in the forum. Sometimes i throw a little gas on the fire there.
I've made 3 improvements since i made the first box bass last year. The strings are 100% nylon and are guages ,105" and .095" tuned to E and A. I also have .085" and .075" D and G strings, but perssonally i prefer to play the 2-string bass with the A and the D string. It just feels good. The neck is somewhat finished smooth now, and the transducer/pickup is awesome!
I have a cousin thats an acoustic engineer and his brother is an electronic engineer, so now they're my partners.

I get booted off of a lot of Bass Forums because i talk about the structure and tone of my box bass. it's weird because EVERY bassist everywhere talks about their bass too, but the fact that mine is available makes every post i do a sales pitch. The thing i'm trying to do is meet someone else that's doing the same thing. making home made instruments.
I play a 4-string fretless bass that i made 25 years ago using scrap bass parts and i play a serious/mean washtub bass too.

those are the 3 basses i own and gig. i have a classic Porta-Flex amp and a trashy Crate amp.

oh yea, Bogdon was my dads name, Vasquaf was his mothers maiden name.

Please understand I wasn't trying to trash you here, nor did I report you on Craig's List. Believe me, as the manufacturer of MoreMe headphones, I feel your pain in getting the word out about your products. I got banned here myself for offering a special deal to HR members.

I've been a pretty good friend to bass players world wide, having designed two of the most influential bass products in the world; that were used by bass players like Jaco, Jeff Berlin, and thousands of others.

So good luck with your bass; I love the concept. I hope you get a Dallas dealer and I'll buy one for sure for the studio. Using the A and D strings makes a lot of sense to me, although a 3 string bass would be the ultimate for me, but the structural integrity would probably be a big problem.

yep yep yep

I made a 3-string but the oak neck couldnt withstand the tension. I added a truss rod, but the routing and material raises the price up. I think the charm of the box bass is that its rediculous inexpensive, and with shipping it's still $99.00. Eventually, i want to have upgrade kits to allow the player to use a bow, multi-strings, and maybe even a fold-up box bass. It'd really be cool to have a cheap great sounding upright bass to take camping without having to worry about sand and smoke. Just a knock around disposeable upright bass. We dont advertize this feature because it just sorta happened on its own, but the box is replaceable! imagine this, you can abuse this knockaround bass and replace the body. Maybe even have different shape bodys?

i can go on and on because the absurdity is what makes it fun.
everything is possible!

Chris, try calling Larry Morgan in Garland, Texas. He's a good guy and the former owner of Arnold & Morgan music in Texas; one of the biggest stores in the country.

thanx

Thanx a ka-jillion Harvey...

i talked to Dave earlier today, but i'm still at work. I'm a gruntled postal worker (NOT dis-gruntled) and will put together a package for Arnold & Morgan Music. thanks again, i'll let ya know what comes of it.

and thank you Kojdogg for finding and posting my bass here in January 2007...
i didnt know my box bass was already posted here. I just joined this week.
i think my success is in other people discovering new ways to acheive sound while having fun.
thats what its all about!

Now it's just called Larry Morgan Music.

My only drum kit is one I made in 1985. Shells are made from 1" spruce lumber cut in beveled strips and glued together. Rims were cut from 3/4" plywood and glued onto the ends. Outer hoops are held on with standard 1/4"-20 hardware from the hardware store and, of course, they are painted black. Here is a picture. For the record, the cymbals and snare are not homemade.

BTW, I love the idea of the box bass. I wish it could be a three string, but I may have to buy the two string version, anyway! :)

Cheers,

Otto

I'll have to get the kit, because, of course, I'm painting mine black! :)

cool

Otto, your drums are sweet! totally original.
what kind of skins do you use? what about sticks too?

I just use Remo heads. I custom sized the rims and hoops to work OK with the Remo heads I already had. Some of my sticks are the typical Vic Firth, etc. Lots of my other mallets and so on come from Rhythm Band in Fort Worth. I also have small toms (6" and 8") that were similarly-made shells and I just glued them onto plastic hand drums from Rhythm Band. No need to make a rim or hoop and they are just single head toms. RBI mainly sell stuff to school music programs, so the stuff is inexpensive!

Geez, maybe you two guys should get a band together of all handmade/homemade instruments. :D

I wonder if that's ever been done before!
