HI, firstly what is the famous sure vocal mic? Is it the 57 or the 58? And secondly, what would be an inexpensive (under $150) but effective mic that would be suitable for micing a guitar cab?

~thanks

However....

Yes, the 58 is THE famous Shure vocal mike for live applications, and the 57 is THE famous do-it-all, Swiss army knife of mics that has long been considered by many to be the standard guitar cabinet mic. It's also the old standard for many as a snare, hi-hat, tom, and conga mic (although I tend to think of the 421 as more the current standard tom mic, but I digress...). However, some prefer the 57 over the 58 as a vocal mic, especially for recording. Some will say they can't hear any difference between the two. They are essentially the same mic, except for the ball windsceen on the 58. It depends, as everything does, on YOUR voice and YOUR taste. The 58 is about $100, the 57 roughly $80. They are both built like tanks, extremely durable. I personally think you can't go wrong getting at least one 57. There will always be something that you can use it for.

More than you asked, I know.

I think it's false, misleading advertising.

They say it's a "famous" mic.

Yet I asked my girlfriend if she's ever heard of it, and she hasn't. Asked my stepmom the same question, and nope. I'll bet if you stopped a random sampling of people on the steet and asked them if they ever heard of the Shure sm58, I would guess at least 9 out of 10 people haven't heard of it.

When I got my 58, I was under the impression I was going to have my brush with greatness, and that everyone would be jealous because my mic was "famous." Looks like I'll have to return it now.

I always though the SM7 was the famous Shure vocal mic?
{heavy sigh} I can't keep up!
Ya'll hash it out and let me know. k?

If it is, then that would be cool. I could sell autographed pictures of it on ebay.

I mean.....you.......well..... yeah, I suppose you could, but the autographs would have to be authenticated. You need to prove that the microphone actually signed the photo! I think I have a few microphone signatures laying around, but none are for the SM7. *hangs head in shame*

Tell me you're kidding..

First off, let me qualify this. I have nothing but respect for both Michael & Chess. Michael probably snores with more musical ability than I will ever have. He is an extremely talented pianist, and equally talented recordist ( I won't say engineer, because I've only heard solo piano recordings from you, but again, I digress..). That piano piece with the Neumann's was just gorgeous. And he's got higher end gear than most of us homerecer's will ever see. Chessrock also has produced some very musical stuff (that gymnasium thing notwithstanding), and I believe my sonic tastes probably run similar to his. But the fact that Chessrock asked his girfriend and stepmom about it, and that Michael obviously comes from a classically trained background, leads me to believe that neither one has probably ever been a singer in a rock band for any length of time. That would be the equivalent of a rock guitar player not being familiar with what a Les Paul or a Strat is. Most people don't even have to use the prefix "sm". You just ask someone for a 57 or a 58 and they know what you mean. And you'll notice that I did say that a 58 was the famous mic for LIVE applications, and it is. I realize that my age (44) might have something to do with my perspective, but waaaay back in the 70's & early 80's, almost no one (other than big time national acts with the financial backing of big record companies) used anything else for playing clubs & small concerts. Foreign mics were rare and expensive.

The sm-7 is the famous Shure vocal mic for studio and broadcast use, however he specifically asked about the 57 and 58.

And if someone asked me what the famous Shure mic for recording is without qualifying it to be for vocals, I would still say the 57. There are probably 5000 57's in use in studios worldwide for every sm-7.

And I didn't say better, just famous.

If you guys were just kidding, then "Never mind".

I gotta switch to decaf.

Cardioid-
Thanks for the very kind words man, that means a lot to me.

Maybe it is time to switch to decaf - my posts were completly "tounge in cheek". You see the key word there was "famous" - if your famous, then everybody knows about you, right? Even your girlfriend, and your step-mom.
Never mind, It was all in fun!

Hey, you're not much older than me - I'm on the third anniversary, of my 39th year.

I asked a bunch of high school kids the other day, and they all thought a 58 was the diameter of Brittney Spears' chest. :)

I appreciate the compliment, but what's the "gymnasium thing"?

Peace.

Though Chessrock's stepmom probably hasn't heard of it, the SM7 was used for vox on "Thriller", which I understand sold very well. That sorta makes it famous among recording types, but I have yet to get it's autograph, at least authenticated.

Ahhh, but if you ask most non musicians to describe what a mic looks like almost all of em will describe a 58 I'll bet. :D

If I could just learn to keep my big mouth shut!

As always, the problem with boards like this is that you can't see people's faces or hear the tone of their voices, so not-very-perceptive types like myself misunderstand the tone of the post. I apologize. I thought you were implying that I didn't know what I was talking about, which many times I don't, and on those occasions I try to just shut up and listen. Perhaps I should stick to that policy more often.

In my own defense, I thought that here was someone with a newbie enough question that even I could contribute something (which happens so rarely).

Chessrock,

By "gymnasium thing", I was referring to a recording that I downloaded, along with some others, into a folder with your name on it. It downloaded as "Honeyhigh_sister.mp3" or something close to that. If that's not yours, tell me and I'll move it out of your folder. I try to keep stuff organized by member so that I can try to associate people with their work. This helps me know who has similar tastes and who I think does the kind of stuff I would like to do, so that I know whose brain to pick.

I didn't mean to start anything here. Sorry.

Two valuable lessons here:

To blackmusic:
As long as you have people like me hangin' around here, there's no such thing as a simple question with a short, direct answer.

To me: Shut up and listen.

Peace

There have been a few times that I've pissed people off or gotten pissed off on this board and a few others (you'd probably be surprized to know another handle I've been known to use on another popular board). And there have been a few times I've taken it personal, but then I kinda' wake up to reality and realized it's only Chessrock -- and who the hell is Chessrock anyway (that name certainly isn't printed on my birth certificate)?

It's only cyberspace. It ain't like the real world. So what if Cardiod is just a little slow to get jokes every now and then. You're still our friend. :) :) :) Just have fun with it all. Oh yea, and "Sister" was recorded in my living room at my halloween party. Not too bad for some dude's Chicago apartment with drunk people running around all over the place, eh? :)

These are the FAMOUS Shure mics

These are the famous Shure mics, especially when you talk to the uninitiated....thanks to Elvis.

:D
