Hi im an audio guy, messin around with Midi for the 1st time. I have a Yamaha P 80 that i have connected (to host) to my laptop's game port, and IM using cakewalk HS 9.0.

#1, how do i create a drum track? I searched through all the midi patches on my cakewalk and cant find the drum kit, i read it was supposed to be number 10, but i cant find it.

#2 Being new to this, the patches and instruments sound wayyyyyyyy to computerized. Is there any way or place to get better patches that sound better and more like real instruments?

Thanks, hate to be such a newbie, but gotta start somewhere I guess.

Ok, figured out the first question messing around here, Drum kit is Channel 10, not patch 10 =) should have known that one.

I still would like to know how i can make these patches sound better. Isnt there someway to make "Grand piano" sound more like a grand piano?

Ok, so is there any cd or better yet software patches that I can get, or is my only option a new synth?

And what about the patches that my Yamaha P 80 has as audio? NO way to use those as midi instruments?

Thanks again, Gare

You need to hook up the audio outs of the Yamaha to hear or record it. The piano on that will sound much better than on your SoundBlaster. Your soundblaster is playing those sounds right now unless you are using a virtual instrument in Sonar. Soundblasters use SoundFonts. Do an internet search on SoundFonts and you should be able to find some to download.

So-----you are saying that one should use the internal tone in the piano rather than using the piano as a midi controller.

Use whatever sounds best to you. Having different options is part of the beauty of midi. Use the onboard sounds of the Yamaha and the SB sounds.
