Hi I just moved to a new place & will be recording in a small, live room. I have 2 mics & will be recording a singer/songwriter - acoustic gtr + vocals "live". Any opinions on using the mics for close & ambient as opposed to one for gtr & one for vocals? I know I have to experiment, just trying to save time. Thanks.

Close-mic'ing will give you more options at the mixing stage because there will be better separation. But if you can get a usable result with less specific placings then you might be rewarded with a more natural sound ......... or it might sound like you playing and singing in a small box-shaped room.

You nailed it -- try it!! :)

Given your scenario, I would try first to get a decent stereo recording, rather than use one for vocals and the other for guitar. I would place the mikes to get a good balance between guitar and vocals. This requires a bit of experimentation and depends on the relative strengths of guitar playing and singing. I would get as close as possible while preserving that balance to minimise the intrusion of the room and its reflections (unless, of course, your room is acoustically friendly).

What models are your two mics? That may make a difference as to the best way to record. When in doubt, try it and use your ears. The end product is all that really matters for you. Good luck, Dave.

I found that if I got the vocals "up-close", and captured them well i was 40% of the way...I haven't tried to get a real "stereo" recording though so if you have time try both. And tell me which worked best:)

late reply

I screwed up & didn't receive notification of yr replies to my original question until after the recording was done. Thanks for yr help!!!

My mics are old Beyer ribbons - about 30 yrs old. I wound up w little seperation but a nice natural sound. The room acoustics are live but not too bad. Thanks again.

ps

I basically used 1 mic for gtr & 1 for vocals & when I played them bk the recordings were identical, which was a surprise to me. I'm guessing they both were mainly picking up the room???
