2/13/8: CAD GXL3000 "Stupid Deal of the Day"

I broke down and got one - I am hoping it has more in common with the ADK Hamburg/Vienna than the looks!!!:)
 
I also took the plunge. From the little I've researched I found a thread here from second_skin that said it may be the same as the ADK GC-3.

Regardless, it seems like a really good deal for a multi-pattern mic... plus CAD isn't a bad name.

I got a tracking number today and hopefully it'll be here soon! Can't wait to try it out.

yeah mine says A-51ST on the circuit board. i don't really know what that means except that there are other mics out there that may or may not say that.

i got mine for free when i bought an mbox2 pro from MF last year. i've only really used one other LD condenser so i don't have a lot to compare it to. recently my singer and i compared it to the AT 3035 that i've been using for a while. on that day in the room that he was in we chose the CAD. not saying that it's better but it worked for us that day.
 
hell yea, i finally got one.

...and a $29 art tube pre on sale for the past year or so

LDC omni is a nice option to have
 
Hey guys! What did you think of it? Just recieved mine today and I'm palying with it right now. In my voice I think it sounds pretty good. The patterns works great. Very good for $70.
 
I'm picking mine up tonight from my folks house... I had it shipped there because my Dad is home during the day and I live in an apartment, so it's been there since Monday.

Can't wait to get it and try out the different patterns. I'm going to attempt some m/s style acoustic guitar recording for the first time with it tonight. Wish me luck... heh.
 
My Dad said he opened it for me today and that there is a dent in the end on the mesh. I'm now pissed and was looking forward to picking it up tonight but I'll have to return it now... even if it works fine, because if I ever want to resell it then I don't want a giant dent - I don't want a giant dent anyway!

Argh.
 
I got mine on Monday and also picked up a CAD TRION 8000 - so I've been playing with both. The GXL3000 has some serious sparkle in the top end - It works quite well on my voice too - I am a baritone that often sings at the top of my register. The TRION definately has more bottom girth to it - but it's tube - but is a similarly good deal on e-bay for $215. I swapped out the tube in the TRION for a GE 5 star 5654 - the tube included is listed as a 6j1 - but the 5654 (6ak5w) works great! and there are a lot of these tubes out there pretty cheap!!! I am glad I bought both of them so far - we'll see if that lasts as I start tracking with them.
 
Well, I called and talked to Shawn at Musician's Friend. He emailed me a pre-paid UPS tag and I'm sending it back and getting a new one at the same cost.

It's a bummer to have to wait... but at least I got it taken care of. I'll probably plug it in before I package it back up and have a listen.

Let us know when you get some stuff recorded... I definitely want to hear that TRION 8000. Do you plan to do any stereo recording with both the TRION and GXL?

My other mic (Groove Tubes GT50) is scheduled to arrive at my folks today. Got it on ebay for $168 (that is with shipping). Probably the best deal I'll ever come across.

I purchased a Trion 8000 a while back which I A/B'd with my Studio Projects T3. I found that the T3 had a huge space and depth which the Trion didn't have when recording an acoustic guitar. The Trion sounded really 2D and thin compared to my T3, so I sent it back.

YMMV.

there's something different about this mic from my others. it's like a very smooth upper mid area that is flattering and does't fade when i compress the hell out of it
 
Looks like mine will be arriving tomorrow... finally! It sure does take a long time to send back a damaged item and have it entered back into their system, and then have a new one sent out.

Hopefully this second one will arrive undamaged!
 
nice with a eh 12ay7 pre also and sent thru art vla 2 ch comp in series, so far just covers for testing, eventually originals i'll post, maybe in 6 weeks or so, loving this mic, very nice cardiod pattern proximity deepness also, must compare to 4040 next.
