I'm new to playing guitar and recording. I just started learning this song. I just want some opinions on how it sounds so far.

This is my first recording with a microphone, before I had to record everything direct.

Thanks.

Lovely tone. Absolutely great. What mic and what guitar and what pre-amp? Even the tone is very faithful to the original. Can't wait for the finished article.

Where's the whsitling?? :p

Thanks TelePaul. Guitar is a Yamaha acoustic/electric.

Microphone was a gift from a friend, it's an MXL V63M. Preamp is the M-Audio DMP3. Sound card is the EMU1212M.

Recorded with Audacity. I'm broke and don't have the money for a good DAW right now but it seems to do the job. For now, anyway. :)

Edit: I haven't finished learning the whole song yet that's why it's kind of short. Although I can't sing or whistle so maybe someone will want to add in their own parts? I think that'd be cool...if not, oh well. :)

The solo in that is lovely, you should definetely learn it. It's not a hard song to learn, if ya need a hand I have the whole tabbed in a Hal Leonard book. The only really hard part is the outro lead.

Seriosuly though, excellent job, the DMP3 is getting wonderful write-ups, I need one myself! Well done.

Yea, I just looked up the tab on the net. I haven't been playing guitar for that long so still kind of new to learning solos.

I'm gonna try and have a finished version posted in the next couple days.

Maybe then someone will want to add in some whistling, and maybe even vocals. :)

It would be good practice for me to try & mix in some vocals.

Yeah I find vocals are a tough part. But you've made a great start man.

Beautiful. Intonation, tone quality. Well arranged. Less is more.

Newbie, that's high praise coming from Timothy; his guitar playing is unparallelled.

Very nice! the only thing I would do is not pan the begining quite so hard. Once it's all going it's great. It a taste thing though I guess.

Great sounding recording and great playing too.

F.S.

Need some help

Thanks Tim, Tele, Freudian. I think I might re-record it from scratch (the whole song this time) and spend a little more time on it. I didn't really spend that much time on this one to be honest. Plus the strings on my guitar were dead.

I have a few questions that would really help if someone could answer before I start on the next version:

1. I listened to it in mono and it just sounds like crap, whereas, the original still sounds good in mono. What can I do when tracking to prevent this?

2. Does anyone know what kind of acoustic guitars were used in the recording?

3. Was the original done in a live setting? I hear a nice (natural?) reverb on the recording, and it the mix sounds more 3D and natural. Instead of 2D like mine. Since I'm doing this myself what can I do to try and imitate that setting?

I tried a little reverb on the rhythm guitars and it sounded okay, but anymore than that and it just sounded muddy.

Thanks for any help. :)

Nice natural verb might be down to the room. Honestly, don't get TOO caught up in comparing yours to the original, remember yours was cut in your bedroom! Are you copying the mono guitar take to another track and panning one left and one right?

Yea I just love the way theirs sounds and I'm trying to make it sound the best I can.

No I recorded them separately, which is why I think it might sound bad in mono (phase issues?). What can I do to prevent this? I think my timing was slightly off but I've noticed even if the timing is spot on there is still phase issues that mess with the sound (but not on well-done recordings).

You can't be THAT new to playing. :) VERY nice! Polished, clean, confident! And if Tim Lawler likes it, you don't need to hear anymore. Kinda like Peyton Manning complimenting your passing.

Relax, you're doing a great job.

You sure it's a phase issue? It doesn't sound like one. Phasing is caused by proximity of two microphones to each other. If you use one at a time, it can't be. It could be a more chorus type effect, occurring because you've tracked the same piece twice. It's called an overdub, it's usually a good idea, especially to thicken out certain parts, but you're not really gonna play the piece the EXACT same twice.

I just don't like how it sounds when in mono. Theirs sounds fine. I'm guessing they performed it in a live setting? And placed the mics the same distance from each guitar?

Oh well, it's not such a big deal.

I've almost finished learning the song, the solo is easier than I thought it would be after looking at the tab (haven't looked at the outro solo yet).

Anyway, thanks for all the feedback and stuff it's been really helpful. I'll try to have a (rough) mix of the whole song in the next day or so.

Thanks again. :)

Sorry, didn't see this post until just now. :)

Yea I listened to a few of Tim's recordings, obviously a very great player. I've been playing for about a year now, so I guess I'm not THAT new, but still a lot to learn.

Thanks. :)

Nice newbie!

You're off to a great start. I was really hoping for some vocals!

I wish I was capable....I can sing a lot of that song, but not all.

Keep us posted as you progress!

Thanks, Jayke.

I'll be sure to post another version once it's done. Hopefully soon if I can get some time (just got a new job ;)).

Thanks again all for all the feedback. :)

Sounds good. I'd be glad to add a guitar part if you want. I remember learning this one a long time ago. Sounds like you got it down so far though.

Let me know.

Sounds great. Nice tone. Very smooth. Good job.

(and yes I am the master of 2 word sentences) :)
