Dammit, Jim, Shut Up!
I was 15 years old when I walked into the Lowery studios in Atlanta with my Telecaster, Gibson Falcon and my band Radar to record our first session. The year was 1966 and if they had even a 4 track, they didn't use it. The band performed live and everything went to 2 track 1/4 inch tape. The vocalist sang on the floor with no baffling, in the midst of the guitar amps. In that session we recorded six songs. You vintage buffs will be able to hear what an Arbiter Fuzz Face from the era really sounded like. Rather than present complete songs, I have made a short medley of the ordeal.

I was he happiest guy in the world being around all those tape machines and flashing gismos. The engineer mixed us on the fly as we went, and I doubt they had ever seen a band like this one before. It was the same studio where Joe South cut 'The Games People Play."

So, for fun, have a listen and I have a small contest. Be the first to name the songs and the artists that originally performed them. What will you win? Probably nothing except the prestige of showing your age, like I am now.

Oh, the band radar still exists in Atlanta, some 36 years later! I'm not with them anymore, though.

The medley is 1966 Recording Session and this damn link better work this time!

Damn man.....still together after 36 years? I bet they still play a lot of the same songs ya'll did back then.. Really cool Crawdad. It's neat being able to hear the roots of where you came from. Since that's live....I suppose that's how ya'll sounded live/

first impression that drummer was lively!!!..i like it...that is you on guitar right?/....very cool....funny thing is this sund is hip right now...the "white stripes "..."the vines "..a lot of popu;ar music right nowhas this ..vibe to it..man this is too short put more of this on here...if only you could hear what i sounded like at 15...yikes....lol

thanks
jamal

Really cool Crawdad - sounds so '60'ish. :)

Wicked!

Cant play the contest though, recognize a few of them. Aerosmith wrote the first one right? :D

1. Dancing Queen (ABBA)
(Train Kept A Rolling - Johnny Burnette Trio)

2. RUN RUN RUN - The Cat (Townshend??)

3. Mornin' Dew - Grateful Dead

4. I can't Keep From Cryin' - Blues Project

5. Sweet Wine - Cream

6. AW C'MON AL!!! - DEXY'S MIDNITE RUNNERS..

Crawdad, these tracks are great... pretty damn hip for 15, buddy.
I was 15 in '66 also, so I won't name the songs/artists.
But I'll lay odds that I'm one of the few here who knows the original artist on Train Kept a-Rollin'. You guys covered the Yardbirds version, who covered the Johnny Burnette version, who covered the original by Tiny Bradshaw. And here's the cool part, Bradshaw did the original in a year with a fine vintage... 1951 :D
I'd like to hear the entire session, too. Hell, in '66 I was playing a Gibson LGO with a soundhole pickup through a Sears Silvertone 1481... wall of sound, baby!
Thanks for posting these, young man.

Mark

Hehehehe... Chris, I didn't know about Bradshaw until a few years back when I bought a Rhino compilation cd called Jump Blues Classics. So, I'm no archive of esoteric knowledge, just a guy with a cd. :D

I thought some of you might find this kind of fun!

Lt. Bob--Thats how we sounded, only probably not that good! We had gigs but the soul bands got the best work. At the time, we were into the whole British Invasion--actually not the most popular music in the South at the time.

jamal buchet--I was just reading an article about those bands you mentioned. I still like that sound so I might like those bands too. Yes, the drummer was busy! He still plays in Radar and works for East Coast Entertainment as an agent.

emeric--Aerosmith! Sure! I think a lot of that 60's sound was the reverb they used. Must have been a plate of some kind. I like that sound! Wash it all in verb man!

Chrisharris--DAMN! You got everything but the Yardbirds! And for all I know, the Johnny Burnette Trio covered the song too. I figured everybody would get the Who and Cream. I didn't think anybody would know the Blues Project! Listen, can I borrow your walker while mine is in the shop?:D

mkg--oooh! I LIKE that young man comment! Ah--so there was a Burnette version. Does Chrisharris get a prize? Oh Tiny Bradshaw! Sorry chris--has to be the original artist (which I didn't even know!):D

I figured everybodys going back into the archives, so I went as far back as I could!

Oh yeah...I forgot to mention that that was truly enjoyable listening material. I like the way you left the "AW C'MON AL!!" in there.

You were jamming at 15. I got my first guitar at 16. I'll never catch up.

:D

Thanks for those
-chris

(and I'm 32)

Chrisharris--Which means you weren't even born yet when these recordings were made! So, come clean...how did you know the Blues Project/ You didn't.....do a song search on the net did ya?!:D I'm glad you enjoyed the radar stuff!

Yeah...about that...

If it ain't porn or this BBS, I don't know how to find it on the internet...and I was beginning to doubt my ability to find this BBS earlier. Yeah, I can tell you more useless music trivia than any 12 industry professionals, but ask me to check my stock portfolio on the internet?????? wha...????

:D
:D

However, I AM a HUGE Al Kooper fan...(the writer, not Alice Cooper).

Let's just say I won, and the prize is...it's... A FREE DEMO, FROM CRAWDAD.

:D

I gotta' bolt for a few days...hold down the fort, partner.

Thanks a bunch for sharing this. I really enjoyed the music and the little story behind it. Great stuff.

I liked you getting yelled at at the end.

I like chrisharris' C'mon Eileen joke. Almost spit out my coffee.

"Aw c'mon Al" I hope they didn't kick you out for that. :D :D :D
Well if they did, it's there loss. ;) Sometimes it's good to listen to the old stuff.

Thats fuckin awesome Crawdad. To be completely honest I enjoyed it more than some of your current stuff. I dont mean your current stuff is bad but those recordings are pretty cool.

Pretty cool crawdad.I didnt recognize any of the songs so I lose the contest.LOL.I see that old fart Chrisharris already won anyway.:DIm 37 and I couldnt recognize any of them. I was a year old when you guys were doing this.Lowery studios......is that Bill Lowery, the publishing guru from hotlanta?

How many mics were in the room?Just 2?Mixer?

I don't want to get into age issues here, but I was playing my Crucianelli bass through my Bassman 100 in San Francisco at that time. Am I eligible for any complimentary prizes?

sounds like '66! ...G-L-O-R-I-A........

a 15 yr old pup in the studio..... love it.

I always like the Kooper "Morning Dew" version best... Man...that was worn out on my first "good" STEREO!!

I had no idea this would get such a favorable reaction. Listening back, there were some things I found very cool about the sounds. I guess its just so different than how everybody makes records now. The singer Doug Booth I thought had a real "recordable" voice. He joined the Navy to avoid the draft and ended up being a dentist! Yeah, but he was the prodigal singer who always got the girls!

The bass player, Jimmy Cobb, ended up playing in a band (don't remember the name) that had a top 40 hit called "Moonlight Feels Right"--which he either wrote or co-wrote.

TripleM, Fed, Flash-- yeah! The drummer, who was the leader of the band and money conscious. We weren't supposed to make mistakes--as if we could play six songs perfectly with no overdubs. Actually, they did some tape splicing. If a song broke down, they'd have us start 4 bars before the goof, then edit the takes together! Anyway, I thought the yelling was kinda funny.

TexRoadKill--Well, I think recording alone basically sucks! Its so much better with a whole band. How ya gonna get a feel with a click track or quantized stuff? I have been thinking about trying to recapture some of this vibe with a new recording. Don't know if I can do it alone.

Kramer--Hey, I made a mistake about the studio. it was called Kin-Tel. Radar did record at Lowery later--my mixup. You know what they say about 'if you remember the 60's you weren't there." I found the original reel and it has a sticker on it. In the room, we had mics on the guitar amps, vocals, drums (can't remember how many). i can't remember iof the bass was an amp or direct, but I know the bass player played through an amp on the session. there was some kind of mixer but I can't remember what it was--and I wouldn't have known anyway!

Monty--You get the same prize as me--you survived the 60's!

mixmkr--I can't count how many times this band played Gloria at school dances and frat parties. I bet they still play it! There was a debate at the time over which version was better--Them or Shadows of Knight. Still like Them myself!

Thanks all who ventured to go back in the time machine!
