What is your budget? And why the 'No PC' option? Just curious. :)

The Cymatic 16lv... still waiting for you to tell me WTF that is, incidentally.

Are you set on 16 tracks or would you look at 24? Budget? What type of music are you recording?

As you already have a 16 track mixer which, I believe, has 16 direct outs, a lot of the stuff on a 16 track recorder - preamps for instance - become obsolete - and you definitely need something that has enough line ins to match the number of tracks you're going to record at the one time - which is? How many mics are you going to be running at once - I'm thinking "live" here... what are you recording?

I am curious as well, as to what your complete scope of what you wish to do is. I have seen bits of your posts, but would love to hear 'exactly' what your goals/budget/expectations/experience, are.

It would really help if you made this all clear in one post. Then we could redirect to that ourselves, and hopefully help more. :)

1500 dollars ... just an old engineer who prefers analog ,, but having to work myself out of that line on thinking. (

if you look on line and type in cymatic recorders you'll see .. 16 channel LIVE recorder

well, thank for your reply. have an a&h mixwizard3.. 16 direct outs. kind of an old school guy and looking to record live perfomances( basic 4 piece kids garage band and do home recording with lot of overdubs. not fond on using software , I find it too cumbersome .. my attention span as an older guy is short. any help would be appreciated.

ICE-16 | ALLEN & HEATH // WORLD CLASS MIXING

You will also need a modest usb hard drive.

Dave.

Pretty sure all the suggestions here would be digital.....

Yes they are. And the only way I know that the OP could record 16 tracks in analogue would be to find a second hand reel to reel tape machine with all the attendant needs to maintain it and find a source of blank tape. As soon as you move to a hard disk solution your recording is digital.

Tape machines I can't help you with but I can heartily endorse the recommendation of the Alesis HD24 mentioned in here several times already.

Are you looking for 16 tracks or 16 channels? Almost any MTR these days can do 16 tracks, only a few can do 16 simulataneously (ie, 16 channels). The Tascam DP-24 (which I own) can do 24 tracks (12 mono, and 12 are paired stereo) but has only 8 input channels. Even the DP-32 has only 8 input channels. An MTR such as the Roland VS2480 has the inputs you need, but really is overkill ... you don't need the preamps, the EQ, the mixing, editing ability ... nothing but the analog-digital converters and storage.

I agree that if you insist on using the mixer you have, the best solution (mentioned so far) is the A&H ICE-16. No preamps, just solid analog-digital converters and a USB connection to a storage device.

thank you .. leaning towards the a&h ice.. guess i'll have to breakdown and learn daw software...

OP, where in the world are you? I have two Tascam DA88s in great working condition sitting doing nothing over here.
Not analog, but hands on for sure.
I skim read your post. Apologies if you were looking for something mobile.

Wouldn't hurt but you don't have to.
AFAIK the ICE16 is just a magic box. You feed in up to 16 tracks from a mixer and get 16 back (plus a stereo mix I think?) . Effectively a "perfect" tape recorder with a near infinte record time.

There is an in depth review of the unit in the current edition of Sound on Sound.
