Heartbreak Hotel

Live performance of a middle school 4 piece band I coached.

I’m on guitar in the background, trying to keep the drummer from drifting too much, heh-heh.

I haven’t been able to think of anything much to do with this to make it better sonically, given that it was recorded on a video camera, but if you have any ideas I'd appreciate them…

I like the vibe, but wow, that is a restoration job. I would try to accent the vintage vibe while help kill the hiss with a high shelf cut about 12kHz. Cut some 700Hz, Try a boost in the midbass range, say 100-200Hz. Then cover your tracks with a nice plate verb, set to slap, and get out of there!

No helpful info from me, but cool tune...they sound like they did a pretty good job...nice vocals...

He does the tune justice. This guy would sound really good doing some blues rock. :)

I'd leave it as an accurate document of an event & THEN record the voice doing other stuff.

That sound's GREAT!

Awesome performance. And I love the recording. I'd just try to kill a bit of the hiss (which doesn't sound the same vintage as the rest), or process the track in some way to disguise the hiss so that it's more in keeping with the rest of the recording: eg. overlay with artificial record pops and crackles or something.

Sounds like you're having way too much fun.

blueroommusic, Dogman, ido1957, jpw23, Shockadelica - thanks guys for listening.

Mshilarious – Good suggestions. I’ll try them out.

Yep. Maybe the best thing was that he was a natural comedian… at the end of the video he did a hilarious interview with the cameraman. I always felt like the comedy-routine-straight-man during the coaching sessions with the band.

That might end up being the most practical approach. Thanks Ray.

Aspiring – Thanks for the suggestions. Good ideas.

Agreed!

Got to say that it was a memorable experience… the band had one of those rare moments we musicians all seek when everything clicked and they sounded way better than usual. Maybe it was all the pretty girls sitting in front of the singer. :D It was tracked outdoors on an asphalt playground, heh-heh. We had a very good Yamaha PA and some good talent doing the live sound. That made a big difference.

That singer, and the rest of the band are hooked now - destined for a life as musicians. That's all it takes... :D

:) :D :) :D

Quite nice for anyone yet alone a 13 year old. I kinda agree with what was said before by keeping it as an acurate documentation of the event. I 'm really impressed when thinking about what i was like as a 13 year old musician. Very cool and nice job coaching.

Take care

Yep. :D Maybe our species isn't so different than the rest of the mammals and even birds... our main motivation is to strut, bellow, etc. to show off to the females.
