Rock Steady
i did my wav to mp3 at 44100 128kbps. Is this right? it sounds alright when i play the cd.

128k is pretty standard. 192k and 256k will probably sound better but the files are bigger. I tend to do 192K as the best compromise.

Thanx Tex' I had made it to mp3 conversion point yesterday and had never asked so i did it at that rate anyways, it sounded pretty good. Less than that and the audio is robbed really bad.

If your encoder supports it, use VBR (variable bitrate) encoding. Usually results in smaller files and much, much better quality.

Are you playing mp3 from a CD, or converting from wave to mp3 and then burning an audio disc? The latter is not something you would want to be doing :)

Im saving the Sonar 2 track waves after editing to mp3, and then saving to cd sequentially as I finish them. Not doing an audio cd.

If I had elected to make an audio cd, why would it not be a good idea?

The Slackman is correct. The only reason to use MP3 is to put it on the net. You should really store everthing as WAV files for best quality.

I'm glad i have saved all the 2 track wav`s . Yall'r right, some of the sparkle is lost going to mp3, even at the higher bit rates. But if you use those, the mp3 nearly is as big as the wav.

At about 256kbps, an mp3 becomes very hard to distinguish from its original wave, at about 1/5th the size...but only if you use a very high quality encoder.

That's just for listening though, any audio that you're *working* on should remain in its most pure form for the life of the material.

Another tip for the kids at home-

Save your 24bit masters even after you have created a 16bit CD version. In a few years when DVDA or whatever has taken hold you will be glad to still have those higher quality masters. And just in case you actually do come up with a hit single then the record company will have better masters to work with.

That is quite the good idea...hanging on to the 24 bit masters. I believe I will start doing that. At the very least it's a sales pitch when things get released on that format.

legend TEX...who'd think of that huh??? thanx man...good bloody idea :D :D
