You don't need it?

Well, I need to put MS Office 2003 on my machine, so I have to upgrade to XP from 98SE. My 30GB HDD is about 70% full, mostly with audio files. So I have an opportuinity here to do a clean OS install by putting everything on the 120GB, formatting the 30GB, installing XP on the 30GB, and going from there.

i recently paid $85 for one still in the original packaging...i say jump on it...i would even if i didnt need it.

Yeah, good price for a reputable brand. I'm guessing it's an internal drive? Your plan sounds good, too - use the 30GB for apps and the 120GB for audio.

You should've said so in the first place. Go for it!
FYI, there's also a Hitachi 80 gig at Fry's for under $40.

So are you getting one just for the heck of it? If I had that mentality, I would've been broke a long time ago! ;)

Is there any reason not to buy WD1200 120GB HDD for $50?
The only one I can think of is the possibility that you will pay FULL price and be left waiting for the rebate.... HAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!

I've always gotten the rebates, except when I procrastinated too much about sending the paperwork in. But I think I've learned my lesson.

The price seems good for the WD 120 GB "SE" series, they're nice drives with a 3 year warranty. Normal dealer buy is NZ$132 = US$92. A good deal (and a good way of installing things), and as long as your machine isn't old you'll have no trouble.

WD are generally good, get the three year warranty ones though. We've had a slightly higher failure rate with these than Samsungs and Seagates. Don't touch Hitachi DeathStars!

Be careful if you have an older machine - if the motherboard was manufactured before about 2000 you may find it either needs a BIOS update or won't work at all with drives over 32 GB.

The Hitachi "problem" is all in the past. I've had the new Hitachi drive in my system for the past year with absolutely no problems. According to benchmarks, it is the fastest drive on the market. It's quieter than my Seagate as well. Apparently, after Hitachi acquired IBM (labeled Deathstar), they improved the quality of the drives. They also come with a 3 year warranty. It's all in the past now.

I use WD800 hard drives. Same specs other than size. Work great!!! (And still more expensive then the WD1200??? Whats up with that???)

FYI These drives are also a bit noisier then my Maxtor hard-drives. May or may not be an issue for you. My server cases are isolated from my recording area so it isn't an issue for me.

We are up!

I installed the 120 as a slave in IDE 0 (I’ve got a CDRW and DVD ROM on IDE1). I used WD utilities to copy everything from the 30 to the 120. I booted XP Pro from CD and had it format and install on the 30. It figured out everything by itself, including DSL and installing the printer. It even got the latest driver for my US122, I guess from the net.

The 120 was FAT32 formatted from the copy, and I used the convert to make it NTFS. But it seemed way slow. I did some googling, and checked the IDE controller. It was on PIO for that drive. Turns out I had a jumper wrong, and that XP downgrades the IDE when there are problems. I put on a fresh IDE cable, and corrected the jumpers to cable select. The MS correction for the PIO on the controller is to uninstall the controller. When I did that, it reinstalled the IDE controller on reboot, and both HDD were UDMA 5! Then I moved files I wanted to keep off the 120 and did a full NTFS format, then moved the audio and pix files back to the 120.

Oh, and the drive seems very quiet. I also took the time to blow the dust out of the CPU heat sink.

Very cool! The whole thing’s gone very well. I’m likin’ XP so far.
