Don't stare at the eye.
Sorry for the double post. I put this up in the mic forum since a lot of folks are reviewing their TNC/Group Buy stuff up there, but I thought maybe someone might appreciate it here too. (And I'd love your feedback).

I did a bunch of variations of the 12 bar blues in E tonight, and just set levels and pans. No EQ or comp anywhere (anything else for that matter). I did so to really hear the mics and pres--but it was also a good exercise in getting the tone right first.

And now the details from the other post:

Imagine a session with nothing but group buy mics and pres. Here’s a tune (if you can call it that) with a bunch of takes on a 12 bar blues in E. Everyone gets a turn at a solo, and they’re all recorded with TNC mics & pres. Here’s the scoop:

Guitars in general: All recorded with ACMP-73 Preamps with the EQ out. (NO EQ)

Drums: Sorry, prerecorded loops. No TNC here.

Bass Guitar: Schecter Diamond Series DI’d through the 73

Clean/Funky rhythm guitars: Left side is a Strat through a Blues Jr, recorded with an ACM-4 dual ribbon on the speaker, and an ACM-1200 back a few feet. Right side is a hollow body Dot through a Valve Jr., recorded with the same two mics.

The first lead (starting at 0:22) is the strat through the Blues Jr. Mic’d as above.

The second lead (starting at 1:06) is the Dot through the Valve Jr., mic’d as above.

The third lead (the dirtier one just over bass; starts at 1:51) is an Epi LP through my B-52 tube combo. Mic’d with the ACM-3 single ribbon up close and the ACM-1200 back a few feet.

Then for kicks, I recorded a couple rounds with the acoustic guitar--both rhythm & lead—(starts at 2:57) Recorded with a pair of ACM 1200s.

I adjusted levels relative to one another, and set pans, but that’s it. No compression or EQ anywhere—not on individual tracks or the mix. (So the whole thing might be a bit quiet) I just wanted to hear how the mics played together and how the pres stack up in a mix.

Here it is:

Very nice work on this. Thanks for taking the time to do this. I wish my ears were capable of picking out the subtle details that would highlight one mic or pre over another, but I'll leave that for the more experienced.

However, what is apparent is the lack of anything undesirable. That in itself says something.

Cool song, too.

Nice work Strat! The gear sounds more than just usable, it sounds good. Thanks for putting together that little demo.

I think you both nailed it--very usable to good. It's hard to say great (or more) without comparisons. And that's not what I've done. But I know my own gear and so I was making comparisons in the back of my head as I listened.

Obviously, I was using the TNC gear on everything--to make the point. But in many cases, this stuff will be in regular use for me.

Sounds pretty good, Bob. Such a nice clear warm sound....Lovely solos, I love the contrasting guitar sounds.
Make a real song out of this!
Never too old to play the Blues.....;):D

Joe :)

The mix really reminds me of old ZZTop. Sounds like you used very little reverb and a bunch of the room mics... Cool....
