10,000 Dollars For Gear What Do I Get?

Ok I've been recording on crap gear since i was 12 years old from 1 mic and a tape player to 4 track to digital 8 track to this garbage pentium 2 computer.

Now im coming into 10 grand to get a whole new DAW setup and I'm just asking comments and suggestions on it.

The computer will be an AMD 4800+, 4 gigs ram, 1 tb memory = 3,000 self build.

Monitor, Speakers I'm still unsure. I've got a huge PA system but I'm not sure about hooking a computer up to it. I've got a Micromix MP8 live gig style PA, and 2 300 Watt speakers, so I was thinking about investing in good headphones and just putting a line into the PA to monitor the computer stuff.

For Sound Card I was thinking the EMU 1820M, it looks quality gets decent reviews, turntable in's im interested in sampling also. I need new mixer and turntables also got these garbage technics bb and dd 2's from the 70's with shure mm-70's or whatever the scratch needle's and a garbage numark mixer 2002x blu dog that i cant even find another crossfader for. So that has to all go.

I'm thinking about getting Sonar 5 as the main DAW program. Also I'm interested in video editing, so Sonar 5 from what I heard has a lot of compatibility, but also I will look into Vegas 6 for that.

Now for for MIDI controllers I'm looking at CME UF5 61 key, looks good for the price and the amount of knobs and faders.

Now a few questions,

I know I want to do a lot of sampling and beat making

MPC 1000 vs. Trigger Finger, Padkontrol, MPD?

I'm willing to invest in a 1k only, but really would the few extra features be worth the investment? Please explain what extra features it does have and why its worth it?

Sound Card 1820m worth it? I really will be doing a lot of recording of guitar, drums, and bass and vocals with mics. Mostly alone and I do have some Mixers already and a digital 8 track to use for inputs so I don't think I will need a lot of inputs.

Outboard compressor aural exiter preamp vs. UAD-1 plug-ins?
I'm willing to invest in an aphex aural exiter, mid grade preamp, and a mid grade compressor, is that overkill with computer plugins?

Sonar 5 producer edition experiences? Anyone work with the video features?
Is pro-tools m powered better plus vegas 5?

Sequoia is the Bomb, and the Designer spent a lot of time in programming, so he knows very well what PC parts have synergy.

This is what I use, couldnt be happier.

The Sequoia plugs are great. Youll still have 3-4,000 left over. Grab a pair of monitors and a poweramp...good to go!
 
with that kind of money to spend at once, i personally would look into a consultant. unless ofcourse you know exactly what you want.

I know a guy who is a computer tweak that will be in my area to consult with.
I mean its a huge deal to buy so much gear en masse, but really I need just about everything upgraded together to get quality material. I check out that
sequoia digital site and emailed them about specs. I checked out pcaudio labs and really I think a self build computer can do what I want most effectively. I know I won't be disapointed with any computer option because the output will be based on whats put in. I just need something that runs audio and visual at a level where I can cut and paste things into a low budget DVD movie, and also get Lightscribed final mix cd's. I want the material raw enough for huge studio post production and engineering but want enough control to put out a quality product to hand out to people.

Really I just wanted input regarding the specific questions I asked, on the Computer Build forum people jumped on a question like this because they are used to shelling out 2-3 grand on a computer for gaming, its just that my needs are more creative specific and I don't know how creative specific their opinions are seeing they are gamers and not multimedia artists.
 
with that budget i would get a nicer soundcard. To be fair i havn't used E-MU but if you want high quality source tracks, look at something by RME or MOTU even.

also a good pair of studio reference monitors is pretty much a must. i don't think a PA system would be adequate, quality-wise, neither would headphones.

i'm using sonar 5 right now. i like it a lot.
 
the Sequoia people know their stuff, and the PCs come with a ridicullously long warranty. Also, the tech team is available 24 hours, and will fly you a replacement PC IN THE SAME DAY if you ever have issues and need it for a gig. Cannot reccomend them enough. Sequoia does literally every audio task that you would ever need, mixng, mastering, burning, comes with Algorihmix plugs standard....Heaven on earth. those PCs also come with Lynx interfaces, which are considered among the best audio interfaces in the world.
They can tailor the PC to whatever specs you want...Sequoias man is Jeff Sheridan. He just built a system for Telarc(the record label).

Get yourself some good acoustic treatment first!!!! Then good mics, then pres, then AD/DA converters(soundcard), and good monitors.

Acoustic treament - Corner bass traps, 4-6" rigid fiberglass in a wooden frame covered in fabric straddlnig the corner. Broadband (built like the bass traps)absorbers in the first reflection point on the side walls at your mixing position, and a cloud(like the others without thee wooden frame, for obv reasons) in the above first relection point. And cover the whole back wall with broadband absorbtion.

Mics - Check the mic forum. I suggest get a few SM57s, and studio Projects B1, and check out the mic forum for others.

Pres - Well you could have these built in with the AD/DA converter such as the Presonus Firepod.

Monitors - Flat response with at least 6" woofer.

PC build yourself, but i don't think you need to go to the extremes you are thinking of. But if you have the $$$ left after all the other stuff, then why not? :D
 
Ohh and Sonar 5 producers is what I plan to get, so yeah, good choice! :D
 
My buddy just dropped $8500. 2 AMS Neves 1073's, Wunder PA4 w/pwr supply, 4 API 512c's (I got the other 2) w/ 6 pack pwr supply. Youll still have some left over for a Chandler Germanium. :D
No really,whatever you get, stick with good shit and youll be ok.

I emailed them and havent got a response yet, I'm interested if they email back otherwise I will probably just go for the self build. As far as bass traps and recording studio soundproofing I'm not going to be doing any of that. Really I will be focusing on keyboards, samplers, micing a marshall stack, and getting some drum tracks, my house's sound is garbage but I really dont care.
I like that wierd sound anyway. Keep pumping out the advice folks good readin :D

If you walk into guitar center and ask that question, you should be able to get at least two blowjobs from the pro audio staff and about $3000 worth of equipment. The attitude and bad information is free.

Who said anything about soundproofing? This is to make you room a suitable mixing space so that your mixes translate well onto all systems.
