I want to buy a new tube amp soon and I am prepared to spend somewhere in the $1,000 ballpark. 2 X 12 combo has always seemed to be the right fit for me, but I am curious about the smaller amps I see. I play in a 4-piece rock band. Should I try a 1 x 12 or should I stick with a 2 x 12? So far I've been looking at the Vox ac30cc2 and the Vox ac50cp2. Thanks a lot.

I haven't gigged regularly in decades, and so I don't know crap anymore.

But if you're going to look at 1x12's, look at the Fender Blues Jr. - significantly less than your budget. I got a used one recently, modded it a little, and now I just wanna rock and roll all night and party ever-y day, sort of. OK, not really, but I like it a lot.

Edit: but if your drummer is at all aggressive, I'd stick with the 2x12 or bigger.

For a little more $, the Mesa Mark IV will do just about everything a guitarist could ask.

There's the Peavey Classic 30. Only tube amp I've owned, but it hasn't disapointed.

if you don't mind lugging the heavy 2x12 (they ARE heavy), stick with the 2 - it sounds so much ... fuller, richer. i love the sound of multiple speakers.

but that's not to say that a 1x12 can't handle the job.

Find a used Marshall 1974X - you'll think you've died and gone to heaven.......

You can buy a Mesa MkIII or MkII (not a C, though) 1x12 for under a G.

I've posted a similar opinion inother threads that are like this one and Ill keep saying it over and over. The best sounding all around amp for me is this one....

http://cgi.ebay.com/Hughes-Kettner-...39:1|66:4|65:12|240:1318&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

I currentely play in a cover band that covers everything from Johnny Cash to Buck Cherry, we play out about 6-8 times a month and do 3 hour shows. Ive owned mine for about 3 years now, I use two of them in stereo although I used to use 1 and it was always enough and then some as far as volume goes and keeping up with drums and the rest of an live electric band. I've used it in a hair metal band also and it was perfect......

If I had to say anything negative is that they are the classic set up of one clean channel and one gain channel. I usually put my gain at 2 o'clock and use my volume knob to control the gain. You could use the rest of your thousand dollar budget and spend it on a nice overdrive pedal to add to the gain if you dont like adjusting your volume knob.

These amps are seriously the best amp I have ever heard. Pristine clean and HUGE robust gain. They just roar. All tube.................................

Ok enough said...........

But yes these 1x12's will keep up with with a band, they are 20 watts and are as loud as a 1/2 stack.

Oh yeah one more thing......the clean channel is pristine up to a certain point then you will get that break up common in low watt tube amps. so the headroom on your clean channel isnot as high as some amps, but again its all personal choice, some guys would welcome the break up on their clean channel and adjust the volume knob on their guitar.

It is a small amp with huge PRO sound. What more would anyone want......

Good luck.

...Should I try a 1 x 12 or should I stick with a 2 x 12? ...

i think the OP question is about the 1x12 vs. 2x12 sound. he's not looking for amp recommendations (at least, doesn't seem to be) and has already been looking at VOX.

Yeeeeah OK, thanks for adding another useless comment that is so common on boards like this. Are you his agent or his Dad or one of those know it all guys that just like the sound of their own voice?? Sheeeeeeeeeshhh:D

The post title is "1x12 ?" and his first statement in his post is "Im looking to buy a new amp". So I gave him a suggestion based on actual first hand experience playing in a band that fit his requirements which is..... a 1x12 in the thousand dollar range.

The amp I suggested is as full sounding as any amp weather it be combo, half stack, 1x12, 2x12.

Basically I gave him an option to check out. Whats wrong with that?

Loosen up and quit posting like this, it doesnt help anyone and just takes up useless space as does this one.

If the OP wants to post a post like this then I am fine with it, but you have no idea what the OPers global needs for information is so next time kindly suppress your urge to be the know it all statesman.

My oppologies to the OP for ranting on his/her post. I know Im completely out of line here.

the way i see it if you're looking to buy a new amp then you go to your nearest shop & try some out.take your guitar in with you and see for yourself which amp sounds the best with your pickups.whether it be a 1x12 or a 2x12there's so many variables like a closed back cab verses an open back, built in effects, spring reverb or digital etc.you're the one that's gonna be playing through it so get something that sounds great & inspires you to play.i will second metalj.the hughes & kettner amps sound fantastic.i had a 2x12 attax 200 stereo 120 watt combo that sounded great on it's own but had enough power to drive 4 cabs.unfortunately it got stolen.

Yeah, any time someone says the range is at or above $1000, Mesa is the first name that goes thru my head.

Maybe because I've never been within 500 miles of a dealer who sells H&K? :D (not that I know of, anyway!)

Make your life easier and your back work less.... look at a 1x12 Mesa Express, and plug it into an external (1x or 2x) cab. If the cab is 16 or 8 ohms, then it will spit out huge sound all day from both the cab and the internal speaker. Then you can spread your sound around, use the amp as your personal monitor, etc.....
