My roommate told me I need 2 Tip Ring Sleeve cables to hook the RNC to my Digital recorder. Since compressions a mono I think I only need one though,

can ya help us?

The RNC is two channel so you need 2 cables if you want to use it on a stereo source. If you plan on just using it on a single channel mono source then one cable is enough.

Thanks for the advice,

but Im not sure if I would need it for stereo or mono,

I basically want to hook up the RNC to 1 track at a time. And I want to do a little compression as I record and than do the main compression to the track after its been recorded,

i want to do each track individual like this, there will be no need really to compress 2 tracks at a time,

So Im guessing I need mono right?

But if I have a stereo delay though I would want 2 TRS ables right?

thanks for the help!

What you need will depend on how you plan to route your signal.

If you plan to use the channel insert on your board, you will need a Y-type of cable...where the base of the Y goes into the channel insert and the two other leads go in and out of the RNC.

You could then use your monitor/effects send and return on your board to bring in the delay... or you could apply the delay later in the software.

Again, it all depends upon how you plan to route your signal.

thanks,

So basically I would need 1 TRS cord if Im only doing this (and forgetting about the delay for the time being)

If I'm not mistaken, the RNC isn't balanced so you don't need TRS, just TS. TRS would work though.

Is the RNC balanced? Will it tell me on the specs sheet if it is?

Also I still am not sure if I would need one or two cords for my RNC. I know it depends on what your doing so heres my senerio again.

I don't believe the RNC is balanced (although I should know... I own one).

Unless I am losing it... I still don't see your signal chain in your posts.

As I see it, you will only use one side of the RNC for the application as you have described. No problem, there.

What kind of cable you will use depends upon the equipment and signal chain of that equipment.

In my earlier post, I described the "Y" cable you will use if you are using a mixing console and using the channel insert on that mixer.

This, however, is not the only way to record...

You might be using a preamp - then going directly to your sound card, for all we know. In that case, you would NOT need the Y cable... you would use two separate cables.

Ok, assuming you're not using channel inserts, the easiest way to hook it up is to take the signal IN via the port labeled "IN" using a standard TS cable. Take the signal out via the port labeled "OUT" via a standard TS cable. If you're talking stereo, then repeat this using also the "Right" side IN/OUTs of the unit. So, either 2 or 4 patch cables (TRS or TS should work, but don't quote me on that). In this case your signal chain should be:

Microphone -> Preamp -> RNC -> Recorder

If you are using the channel inserts on your mixer, then you need one TRS cable to the IN port of the RNC for mono, and one additional cable to the IN port of the right side for stereo. The other side of the TRS cables should obviously be plugged into the channel inserts on your mixer. So either 1 or two TRS patch cables. In this case your signal chain would look something like this:

Microphone -> Mixer -> (Channel Insert <=> RNC) -> Recorder
