My binaural microphones use a single 1/8" stereo cable/jack. I want to get a big extension so I can move around a little more. I'm already using what I believe is 20 or 25ft. Haven't really noticed any problems other then some "hum" or "interference" when I'm around a TV or something that's turned on. But I think that's normal.

Anyway, how long of a cable can I get before I start having problems? And are most 1/8" cables the same or do I really need to buy more expensive ones?

I'm thinking at least 50ft. Is that too much? Can I also add another 25ft to the one I already have?

Until I get the right Y cable the path is:

Binaural mics -> Long 1/8" cable -> The battery module -> Line In on my SoundBlaster.

When I get the Y cable it will be:

Binaural mics -> Long 1/8" cable -> Y cable -> DMP3 -> M-Audio 2496

cable capacitance will start being a probem at the length you're at right now. this means that as the cable gets longer, it'll start to act as a LPF (so you'll lose HF info).

"s a very general rule, high-impedance mics or feeds from high-impedance instrument pickups shouldn't be longer than around four or five metres, as the cable capacitance can cause the high frequencies to be attenuated, but low-impedance balanced mic cables can be tens or even hundreds of metres long if the sending and receiving devices are designed properly and the source impedance is very low. With semi-pro equipment, keeping balanced mic or line cables down to 10 or 20 metres maximum would be sensible, though it's still best to keep all cable runs as short as you can."

Well that fuckin sucks. :mad: :(

I guess I'll just have to be patient and wait until I can afford a portable recorder so I'm not confined to this small ass space.

Thanks though. :)
