  I searched this site numerous times tryng to find posts about laptop brands and laptops that are known to be bad for recording.

Also searched with google, etc. The last thing I wanted to do was make another post in here about this. But I'm stuck.

Basically I don't want to spend over 1,500 on the laptop.

Initially I was going to get a Dell inspiron 6000. Heard they are pretty sturdy but read too many people having soundcard and recording problems with them. Plus, i already owned an inspiron and kind of want something different.

My question is- Many of you down-talked the Sony Vaio's--- why???? What is so bad about them??

What brand should I be looking into??

I *know* what specs I want.. I'm just lost as to a preffered brand and model?

Specs:
1gb RAM
pref 15+in screen
pentium M centrino atleast 740 (1.73 ghz)

the built in storage doesnt matter much because i will mostly be using an external storage for recording. but atleast 40 gigs i guess.

most laptops are customizable if you order it off of the dealers website anyway. so i guess the above doesnt much matter

So, does anyone know of a brand of notebook(PC!!! i am not a mac user) that is known to be sturdy for home recording??

oh ps- i will be using a soundcard via firewire. maybe a firebox...not completely sure yet.
thanks.

the fact is the best store made laptop is a dell or apple if you use mac platform. the most expensive laptops are out of your reach like the northwest falcon for a heafty 4 grand but these are superpowerfull and more directed towards gamers.id say go with a dell or look on www.newegg.com for a abs system

I use a Dell Inspiron 8600 with a Tascam 1804 and it is solid as a rock. I had thought about an ABS system, but was a little worried about quality in the long run. Don't know much about them.

Unless portability is your #1 criteria, your biggest bang for the buck will be a desktop/tower style pc.

As for the Falcon NW stuff...I'm a very satisfied customer. Their support is first rate...a little spendy but they'll make it the way you want it.

Of course, you could always DIY a PC and save some real bucks.

i need a laptop

i dont need much cos i will only be recording 2 channels at most at a time. :P

it just needs to be able to handle the tracks. if thats the right word.

just wondering a sturdy brand..

Like I said. I stick behind my Dell 100%. It has had zero (and I really mean zero) problems. I've done some dumb registry editing that required me to reinstall windows once, but that was my fault, not the machines. Dell makes a good product, and has good warranty.

Gateway MX3560 w/ Centrino 735, DVD-R/W and 512MB of Ram:

$1049

Hitachi 80gig 7200rpm laptop hard drive:

$219

= $1268

I've been using a Gateway for 3 years now, without a problem. And it's a helluva lot slower than this one.

I am very happy with it. Dells are decent too, at least the current ones I've seen, such as the 6000.

check out acer. they have bery nice laptps for a competative price. my bro just bought one and i think i will be gettin gone in a month or so.

my toshiba has always served me well. i don't know what their current models are like but mine was always good to me
