1/4" into computer?

OK, I will be a freshman next year at Chapel Hill, and I would like to use my laptop to do some VERY amatuer recording. Basically, all I want is a card / device that will allow me to plug in a 1/4" guitar cable and not have it sound like total crap on the computer end. Like I said, I am using a laptop and will just be using this to mess around w/ some riffs, etc. so I don't need professional expensive equipment. Anyone who had any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Also, to any tarheels out there, GO HEELS
