001 or delta 44 combo

Hi! Right now my recording gear is the following:

Soundblaster Audigy
Shitty home stereo for monitoring
Sony ECM-MS907 stereo mic (it really sucks)
Roland RS-5 Synthesizer
Yamaha TQ5 synth module
Cubase 5

As you can see I'm in need of an upgrade. For monitoring I've been looking at the Yorkville YSM-1 that seems to be really good for the price.

My question is this. Wich one of the following combinations would be the best:

1. The digi001 package

Digi001
No mixer (and use the two xlr inputs for preamps and connecting my synths directly to the mono inputs without preamps)

2. The Delta 44 package

Delta 44
Soundcraft M8 mixer



I know the digi001 soundcard is much better than delta 44, but I can't afford both a digi001 and a mixer. If I buy the delta 44 package I will get a not as good soundcard, but a decent mixer that I could keep when I later upgrades my soundcard. The prices for these two alternatives is about the same. I heard Digidesign has made an asio driver and therefore i still could use cubase for softsynths. I don't yet have a high quality mic, but I'm planning on buying a standard SM58 for now and later when I have the money buy a good condenser mic.

What do you guys think?
 
i was under the impression that with protools hardware you HAVE to use protools softwear. It just won't work with other stuff.

Hmm thats a good debate.
Personally i use logic audio, so i woudln't buy a digi001. if i used protools i would.

The digi001 would give you better converters and i think 2 usable preamps. It has 8 ins/outs i believe, but only 2 preamps. So you'd have to buy a mixing board or some outboard pre's anyways if you want any more tracks.

The delta 44 and a soundcraft m8 might be a good choice. Im either getting a delta 44 and an m8, or maybe a used mackie 1604vlz pro, if i could get one off of ebay that isn't a million miles away. Thats a tough call, but it doesn't sound like your using protools so take that in mind. I don't know what these asio drivers do, so maybe a protools user could help you out.

personally i'm going to get a soundcard/mixing board. I'd like to get a used delta 1010 for cheap, i can't afford one new right now.

This is no longer the case (allegedly) with Digi's ASIO drivers.
