    decent mp3 encoding

thanks for the input. i never considered that the mixes might affect the encoding, but now that you mention it, the mixes that i have had the most problems with as far as mp3 artifacts are generally the most bright, and have a lot of high frequency information (lots of air, and fuzzy/bright...

    decent mp3 encoding

wondering if anyone can recommend a free or reasonably priced software (PC) for encoding mp3s at 192 and 128, from wav files. i've tried audacity, which uses the 'lame' codec (i think), but i'm totally dissatisfied with the amount of artifacts it leaves behind (and yes, i know it's still an mp3...

    Amy Winehouse's cd.....nasty

i think it's actually one of my favourite masters of the last few years, amy winehouse's back to black. it's hard-limited, distorted, and loud, but the edge of saturation on her voice sounds really smooth, and nice big and bright eq spreads. 60s music has dynamics? maybe a lot of it, certainly...

    solo strings vst? (recommendations)

holy crap. listening to those samples, i will most definitely give synful another go. i wonder if there is a bank database somewhere...in any case, it sounds worth a substantial time investment for the results others have gotten with it. thanks!

    solo strings vst? (recommendations)

synful orchestra f#$@ing sucks. it's a bad synth, what i really want is sample based for realism. thanks for the recommendation though, free demo is always worth a shot. i will try giving dean solo strings a listen. thanks for the input!

    solo strings vst? (recommendations)

i'm trying to get a vst chamber strings section together for an orchestral pop project i'm working on. i'm currently using the EWQL symphonic orchestra silver edition, the ensemble/section samples are really good, but i'm not satisfied with the range of solo voices for both violin and cello, and...

    Need drums.. Software recomendation?

i highly recommend Addictive Drums over ezdrummer. the price is a lot more reasonable for one. and its a much easier thing to work with in mixing, maybe not quite as large or detail oriented in their samples (no mic bleed-through samples - who needs this? synthetic mic bleed?) but a very decent...

can i use my outboard multitracker to mix in cubase?

thanks. i figured it out. for anyone else - you just have to set the korg up to transmit control changes in SysUSb > MIDI. and then add the generic midi device in cubase. the generic fader 1-16 program in cubase works perfectly well.

can i use my outboard multitracker to mix in cubase?

i'm running cubase LE and i have an outboard digital 16-track [Korg's d1600mkII] that is also a midi device - but cubase doesn't have it listed in the midi controllers page. is there a way for me to set this up so that i can control the faders and pan positions in cubase from my multitracker...

plugin to analyze eq spectrums for all your tracks simulataneously?

i'm wondering if anyone knows of a plug-in that can show me an eq spectrum analysis of my entire mix, but by showing me the eq responses for the individual tracks that contribute. i mean, so i can see all in one screen the overall eq balance, and i can see just the bass guitar (maybe it's color...

    "ducking" reverb - help!

i read an article that made reference to a "ducking" reverb effect on a vocal, that is designed to give a large amount of slapback effect at the end of each vocal line but not during the rest of the vocal, "ducking" the main vocal line and as it were and getting a nice spring-type echo on the...

    which soundcard?

hey, thanks a lot danny. very informative. ok, so then my only issue is - will the m-audio 192 be able to give my monitors a high quality signal? i'm guessing that sense the hardware on both ends is m-audio and the price ranges are somewhat similar, it's probably a good enough matchup for my...

    which soundcard?

i am beginning to set up a computer based studio and am wondering about soundcards specific to my situation (if anyone has any pointers, much obliged!). i have an outboard console (korg d1600mkii) with preamps that i'm pretty happy to do all of my tracking on at the moment, i'll be using my PC...

what is a normal amount of noise here?

what is a normal amount of noise on a line-in from amp guitar (with distortion on, medium-low amp gain, trim at -10)? i'm getting steady background buzz at about -40dB... yes, i've heard of microphones...

    generic vocal comp settings?

ha ha mixsit, dead right, i'm running into problems especially when either voice changes registers, difficult to keep the volume under control then. but yeah, also the root of the larger problem is that the performances aren't really worthy of simon and garfunkel. thanks a lot for your suggestion.

    generic vocal comp settings?

can someone recommend standard-ish threshold, ratio and volume settings for a basic vocal compressor - i've got a new dual reverb/compressor unit i'm running live vocals through with a not-great-but-decent quality digital compressor and want compression to blend two vocals (male and female)...
