I tried to treat my very small home studio; I’m now looking for advice to make it better as I think I’ve over done it.

I would have positioned my speakers according to the manual before I spent a penny on "room treatment".

    let me see your studio!

I've been updating over the past few weeks. Both of my old tape machines have been serviced, and I wanted to record with the computer on or off. I also added a new monitor to replace my old Apple Cinema display, which is now in my office. One thing about my office is that it's where I spend...

The SHOCKING Behringer NEVE 1073 Preamp

I've done the cheap thing and I've done the mix and match quality gear thing. These days, I have one of those little API mixers, a 4 channel API preamp and a couple (Audio Scape) LA-2A and 1176 comps along with a nice old Larc reverb by Lexicon. I've found (for me) keeping to the things I like...

Times like these we learn to rack again

Somewhere I have an ADA MP-1, but the chorus doesn't work on it. I have a Digitech Twin Tube that gets used more than I would like to admit for weird sounds.

Who still mixes with a console?

I use The Box and recall sheets for my 500 series gear. For my hardware (1176, a couple LA2A, etc) I put the plugin set like the hardware as a placeholder for recalls:P

    Digitech GSP 21

I have the Twin Tube, which is from the same series. When these came out they were unobtainable for me. I had a GSP-21 for a few months a long time ago. Bought it cheap and it was fun to play with. The Twin Tube actually has some really unique sounds I can't get out of anything else. A sleeper...

Order CDs vs. burn my own CD-Rs - a problem of CD player compatibility

I get printed blank CD-Rs from Disk Makers. They have my company logo on them, and they're not that expensive. Usually, I order 100, and they cost about $120. It's more than buying a spindle; they look good and always seem to work. I have an old HHB CD recorder that I bypass the converters on...

    MIDI for Dummies

There's a great book called MIDI for the Professional. I bought it for a class way back in the 1990s. I've used it as a reference ever since. I'm sure it can be had for a few dollars used.

    Signature Guitar Strings?

For years, I have used Fender pure nickel strings. Dynamax or 150 or whatever they called them. I was at Gibson last year and switched to their Historic strings, which I like. Not a huge D'Addario fan, but they're fine. I just don't like stainless steel. I do use Ernie Ball on a Mosrite because...

    Signature Guitar Strings?

They have been for a long time. Chet Atkins had signature Gretsch strings. Les Paul, Joe Perry, and Ace Frehley have all had Gibson strings over the years.

    Up for a new amp...

I liked the 11 more than my old AxeFX. YMMV

I would get the Champ serviced.

To Plek, or Not to Plek? That Is My Question

I think the machine makes sense (kind of) in a production environment. I know Gibson pleks everything now. I've gotten three guitars from them in the last year and they've been good to go. Of course, the guitars I've gotten from them before the Plek were always good, too. Today I think people...

    Narrowing Down a new Interface

Are you sure you need 8-10 mics on your drums? What kind of room are you recording in? Arturia interfaces fly under the radar but are great and come with excellent software. Any of the prosumer types of interfaces will have preamps that work and sound clean. I don't think there will be a big...

Anyone have insight regarding this Beatles console that was (supposedly) found in a dumpster?

Not surprising. I bought a DDA console with a lot of history behind it for $100 at a municipal auction. I was the only bidder and it would have been trashed if I didn't pick it up. There's tons of gear out there for the picking through unorthodox channels.

Finally Got My Tape Machine Hooked Up Today!

A few years ago, I found this MX-5050 mkiii 8-track for about $50. It blew fuses, and I brought it to be serviced, which took a long time due to parts and other things. Anyway, I went to pick it up today, and it's all aligned, calibrated, and biased. I also had some mods to the electronics done...

    This surprised me VHS

What kind of DAT machine are you using? I remember seeing a lot of people using different converters on DAT machines, the AD-500 being popular. Someday we will get that ADAT (with the black and silver models) and SV-3700 plug-ins to go with the Studer and Ampex plugs :P
