The big difference is that the vf80 has phantom power, which may help you because generally speaking acoustic guitars are recorded with condenser microphones, which require phantom power. This can be overcome though, by buying a microphone preamp. I have not used the mr8, but it appears easy...

psongman - you are not quite correct there. You dont have to have the fader up to record sound. You have to have it up to monitor what you are recording however. You set the recording level by using the trim pot, not that fader. jfrog - your method would work.

Sounds to me like your DMP3 is the problem and not the MR8. Re-reading your post, you dont have problems when plugging straight into the MR8? Try and eliminate each piece of the signal chain, including all cables. Tube

sounds like a phase issue to me..."fucked up ass hollow fuzz SOUND!" pretty much describes some out of phase stuff. This could come from having the +'ve's on SOME of your connections wired to the -'ve, and certainly in the case of the DMP3, you are using 1/4"-XLR cables. So....go get some good...

John try using XLR cables from the mixer's main L/R outputs to the VF80. This will be a balanced signal all the way and will terminate any interference. Tube

MIDI-PC link will not work, MIDI data is different to audio data. SCSI drive will work, but you will need a SCSI interface on your PC. My friend uses the vf16 with a SCSI Jaz drive and this works ok. ADAT link will work too, but of course you will need a soundcard on the PC with the ADAT...

This is your best option if you are set on the mr8. Forget the extra mics and mixer etc. and just record using one mic on one track.. This will allow maximum time. Again though, I'd consider something other than the mr8. It has a lot of functions and in-depth stuff particular to music...
