Question about Shure SM58 for Home Recording

Actually, 58's "can" sound great for vocals (nobody's returned "Frampton Comes Alive yet over it/mostly kidding here), again it depends on the vocalist/material. Personally would have no qualms about being recorded on a 58-through a major studio w/premium pre's, SSL's, blah blah blah. FWIW I...

    Shure KSM32 ... Any Thoughts?

Andy, another nice microphone line quite comparable for le$$ is the Studio Projects CS Series. Also like the AT4050 quite a bit, but the CS5 is more flexible (EQ switches) and costs less too. Chris

    $400 for Joly 319's or?????????????

The MJ mod of the 319/219's is widely respected. Unless there's a real possibility of re-selling it, I would say go for it. Personally already have access to some great vocal mics (including U87/U47/etc.), so haven't gotten any modded mics done FWIW. Chris

SM58 or AT 2020 for vocals

+1 AT2020 between those two IMHO, without you shooting out each one in person. The 2020 has a generally good rep FWIW among pro VO folks who've used it. A SM58 (or 57) can sound REALLY good on some singers. But even then you usually need to compress/EQ the vocal more extensively than using a...

Blue Mics! ...Voice Your Opinion Please

The Blue Baby Bottle, along with the Studio Projects CS series, are THEE two best LDC vocal microphones I ever tried (male hi-bari) for under $500. And they give the higher $$ LDC's under a grand a run for the money too. Usual suspects tried include AT4050/4040, MXL V69 & 2003A, Rode NTK/NT1...

Condenser Mic for a Tenor Voice

Not a condensor, but the FIRST vocal mic I'd buy as a high tenor (high bari here BTW), is the Electro-Voice EV 635a. Chris P.S. With your budget you could also pick up a nice LDC like the Studio Projects B1, along with the 635a.

where can i buy a second hand AKG C12

John, I had the good fortune of being able to sing for extended periods into a Telefunken USA repro of a C12 at the last couple of NAMM shows in L.A. (It was awesome!-like their 251 IMHO) So... Have you had a chance to listen to the Telefunken USA version? BTW thanks very much for hanging out...

    EV RE320 A new Monster

Funny, I tried the RE320 out at the last NAMM show, and wanted to really like it but thought it was too crispy on the top end of my voice (high baritone/low tenor). Anyway... Tried it again today over at GC and it's just plain wrong for my voice. Like the Beyer M88, the high end response isn't...

Vocal mic comparison! VOTE NOW AND DISCUSS

rockguru, (with all due respect) even with "odd angles", etc., you'd probably be much better off recording else-if possible. Most likely, there's significant bass build-up around 400Hz="boomy/boxy" room tone. If you go to RealTraps - Home they have some great articles, for your review...

    Blue Baby Bottle Microphone

IMHO a "safer" choice would be the Studio Projects CS1. FWIW my other favorite LDC for under $500 IS the Baby Bottle, but what works great for me, may not work as well for you. The CS series is way more flexible, and I was just as pleased with the tone. Chris

Scream and Not Lose Your Voice?

I'd contact James Lugo at www.vocalasylum.com Nice guy, with a killer tenor voice BTW. He also co-moderates one of the forums at www.gearslutz.com Chris

Newb over here. Question on Mic & Preamp in a room with Computer hum

Another excellent vocal mic, besides the RE20, is the Electro-Voice RE16. The RE16 is a hand held mic, like a 58. The Joe Meek ThreeQ (pre/compressor/EQ) runs about $250, and IMHO would be a good alternative part of the "plan". You could run it through the mbox's insert. Then put the output on...

    Studio Projects VTB1

If you still have that M500, the VTB-1 ought to complement it well. When Harvey Gerst reviewed the VTB-1, it went great with a RCA 77 ribbon. The VTB-1 is a "sleeper" mic pre-underated IMHO. It's a bit on the dark side, so it goes well with otherwise bright LDC's, ribbons, and those (like me)...

Newb over here. Question on Mic & Preamp in a room with Computer hum

First $500 I'd get... 1) Studio Projects VTB-1 mic pre (around $120 new) 2) Used Shure SM58 (estimate $60) 3) Real Traps "Personal Vocal Booth" aka PVB ($300) or GIK Acoustics acoustic panels ($300) Then when you can allocate more $$ would suggest... Studio Projects C1 If you DON'T have a...

Studio vocal microphone, Shure vs Blue vs EV???

Sorry, by "premium" simply meant something well above the Behringer or Mackie VLZ kind of thing. At least a Studio Projects VTB-1, M-Audio DMP3, or Mackie Onyx, which all have a good sound. Chris

    Mic for recording vocals

IMHO ditch the Behringer and use the extra $$ for a... 1) Classic dynamic ala Beyer M88, or vintage Sennheiser MD421 (not the newer MKII!) Thinking these will run somewhat cheaper than a Shure SM7 or EV RE20, for example. Also then upgrade by adding a nice sounding budget mic pre, like the...

Studio vocal microphone, Shure vs Blue vs EV???

FWIW the 'ol 55 that Elvis used had a different capsule than the "modern" one today. While the 2020 is a nice vocal mic, the EV 635a thankfully is still in production. Otherwise I'd be somewhat reticent to ballyhoo it's virtues, lest the ebay price zoom up-like the RE15. For one thing, if you...

Studio vocal microphone, Shure vs Blue vs EV???

AFAIK the 55SH is made with a SM48 capsule. The SM48 is a "in production" vocal sleeper mic. It doesn't have an impedance matching transformer (SM57 does). Therefore it tends to "load" better with budget pre's/mixers ala Behringer/Mackie VLZ's (Onyx series are nice pre's for a SM57 BTW). Net...

If You could only have one mic which of the following would it be?

Around 6 months ago, was floored how well SM57>Universal Audio 610 mic pre works on me. And I've played around with a number of uber $$ LDC's (Telefunken USA, Neumann U87ai, etc.) FWIW. Chris P.S. T3 is a winner too, and their CS models are comparable IMHO.

    shure 55sh

Check out the Heil microphone that looks similar too, "Heritage" IIRC. Chris
