best book to read on recording??

Try "Home Recording for Musicians for Dummies" by Jeff Strong. That is the first book I read - pretty complete and it's an easy read.

    From the start....

This book will give you a good start and a good grasp of terminology, and it's a quick read: Home Recording for Musicians for Dummies - by Jeff Strong Where to start? Just start recording, make mistakes, learn from them. There are no shortcuts - you just need practice and experience...

    Help with vocal harshness

    Try angling the mic.

singer sings consistently sharp - fix?

If she sings sharp, try lowering the mic. Folks typically sing flatter when looking down, and they sing sharp when looking upward.

    Shure SM58 or SM57

Hook it to your fast trak via XLR cable. WITHOUT phantom power (dynamic mics don't need it).

    Upstairs Studio Build - Pics

Wow, that looks like my house, and I have a studio above the garage in the bonus room too. I created some deep bass traps using fluffy insulation behind those knee walls. Quite effective. Can you post a link to your other thread about this? (couldn't find it)

Looking For a Decent Condenser Microphone

If you want an MXL, I have read good reviews of the MXL 2003a ($139). They say it is flatter in response than most MXLs (that would be good) - Joly likes it. Of mics I own in that price range (B3, AT3035, M179, used MK319), I prefer the Oktava MK319 ($110 used).

    Monitor and Sub Question

I use the KRK 10s sub with KRK RP6 mains. KRK recommended crossover in this configuration was 80hz. Also, you really need to balance your levels between sub and main, and KRK has a detailed process for that (see the docs for the KRK speakers). That 10s sub is very powerful compared to my...

    Suggest a complete newbie package

Get good quality everywhere in the chain now and avoid expensive process of gradual upgrades. Here is a concrete suggestion I wish I would have had as a newbie: used Oktava MK319 mic ($110) > Emu1616m PCIe interface ($400) > Reaper DAW ($60) Use the preamps in the Emu - they are nice, and so...

    Strings in acoustic guitar

That'll drive you nuts working with capo, interpreting the fret markers, etc. If you are concerned about the neck, just use a lighter gage set of strings and tune normally. Necks can be reset, and it is fairly normal for a 30 yr old Martin to get a neck reset, so I would not "fret" about using...

Acoustic Guitar Mics... Any Thought? (No Large Diaphragms)

Great post, Rich, regarding quiet acoustic sources. I have to turn off the HVAC, the refridgerator, and the vintage clock, as well as banish all life-forms to the basement, and then only record in between the truck traffic on my street and the lawn-mowing in my neighborhood.

The version you download is the full version, uncrippled. If you like it, you can buy it.

Which software for home videos ??

So you mix on your standalone recorder? In that case I would take the final mix (the stereo mixdown), and export it as a WAV to your computer. Then drag the audio WAV and the video file into Reaper for the sync process. If you have not used Reaper before you would have a little learning...

Which software for home videos ??

try Reaper for high quality audio-video sync I highly recommend Reaper v4.1x for synchronizing high quality audio recordings with video from any source. Just make sure you record the audio in 16bit/48khz and it will sync nicely with video using any of a number of video formats. There are some...

    Cardioid Condenser Microphones

I record a lot of acoustic instruments (guitar, mandolin, old-time banjo, fiddle), and have used several SDCs. If it were me, and I had $400, I would hold off and save to reach $600-700, then spring for a pair of sm81s ($700/pr) or peluso cemc6 ($650/pr). I have used both extensively. These...

Problems with new interface - outputs

You should be able to hear the first track being played as you record the second track. Are you using direct monitoring on your US-122 to hear the second track as you are recording? (you should be). Can you hear your first track when you play it back (without trying to record a second track)?

Thinkin about buying the ART Tube Microphone Preamp

Your biggest step up in sound right now is to quit using the computer's sound card, and get an audio interface designed for recording. Use the preamps on the interface until you decide what you don't like about them, then buy external pres accordingly.

    Mic recommendation ~$400 or so...

I second the SM7 recommendation for a good dynamic. But you might want to consider a multi-pattern mic, for the versatility they offer. Oktava MK220 is nice, and in your price range.
