Can someone tell me why this thing is 6 grand?!!

Holy crap. I actually like Blackmore, Rainbow, and much of the Deep Purple catalog (that live in Japan record they released is pretty amazing), but that is one of the worst solo's I've ever heard. It sounds like he just learned that pentatonic scale and wants to show everyone... again and again...

Is there a desirable quality to recording to cassette...

Hey Aaron. I dig the stuff you have up on myspace. Any chance you could post mp3s or waves somewhere so I can hear it better? Myspace streaming drives me insane. I might as well ask what equipment you used with the 238 for those recordings...

    A little test

Sounds good! I also prefer the first, though the second isn't bad. If the drums were backing a rock n roll outfit, you might not really notice in the mix? I noticed that the tom was a bit loud in the mix, too. I usually go three mics on a kit, but am always careful to get as much snare as...

    Tascam 688 ?

Sure. No problem. Hope it works out for you. I've been dying to get all 8 tracks (from my 488 recordings) individually into cubase for a while, but can't find the time to get to my friend's to use his (very nice) computer recording set up. My setup is, well, very inadequate.

Very clean 388 in the midwest...good price

This is killing me! I just bought new monitors! I can't afford this!!

    Tascam 688 ?

Try deoxit on the faders: http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=341-252 or http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=341-202 To import the tracks, you'd need a DAW... preferably with 8 tracks. If you don't import them all at once, you'll have a hard time...

    Sony Walkmans

Interesting question! I go ipod myself. Too convenient to pass up. My huge box of cassettes started to fall apart and sound like crap a long time ago, any ways. I threw those out and a lot of the cds (I ripped a lot of it to mp3) and now have a few hard drives of music (one ipod, one computer...

Mic Preamp needed for Tascam 388?

FYI, I remember reading somewhere that the Audio Buddy's phantom power isn't a full 48 volts. I don't understand why they'd do this, nor do I know what you'd use a low voltage phantom power for... perhaps some mics will work on lower voltage?? I assume they did it to save money and still appear...

    Tascam 488 Analog 8 track

Wow. What trickery! Thanks! I'm excited to give this a try!

    Tascam 488 Analog 8 track

Yeah, I've found myself wishing recently that the 488 had 8, or at least 4 outputs. I'd like to dump the tracks, unmixed, into my computer for mixing. I think the only output option is stereo...

Cheap source for Maxell XL-II cassettes

Yeah, I feel like I got my tapes the day after I ordered them... though I may be exaggerating. Whatever the case, the service was great and surprisingly fast.

ANOTHER new toy! Lemmy Action Figure

That is the coolest action figure I've ever seen. But, how does it sound on tape?

Cheap source for Maxell XL-II cassettes

I think it was 9 bucks. But I live in NYC... close to the place. I had to pay sales tax, though.

Cheap source for Maxell XL-II cassettes

The pic is of the 90, but under 'product description' you can order either the 90 or the 60. I got 30 of them last week.

Cheap source for Maxell XL-II cassettes

Better, yet: http://www.tapes.com/product_info.php?cPath=95_103&products_id=1320 And they still have the 60 minute tapes (which I can't find anywhere else). Unfortunately they have a $25 order minimum... so I had to buy 30 tapes. No big deal, honestly.

    Deoxit?

uh... I'm not sure which it is. I didn't know they offered two different kinds. This is what I bought (and it works great): http://www.parts-express.com/pe/pshowdetl.cfm?&DID=7&Partnumber=341-202&ctab=1#Tabs

    Deoxit?

That stuff's great. I can't tell you how many 'dead' pots I've salvaged using it... I think I saw it once at Radio Shack, but it was part of some combo kit or something. I ended up buying it from parts express. Though the shipping is always killer.

    Tascam 244, 424, or 488?

I will say that the 488 is super easy to use and relatively flexible... if you're used to using 4-track cassette units. My friend (who used to be an avid 4-tracker before moving onto protools) was impressed with the quality of recordings you could get with it. I was wrestling my way through...

What I did this weekend... (mp3 link)

Sounds good! I like the delay on the drums. It doesn't sound too bassy on my crappy work headphones...
