Fleetwood Mac - Dreams - Cover - please BASH!!

I don't mind the male vocal for the lead, but there is a weird effect going on with the dynamics, where it seems there is some sort of compression or ducking happening at weird points. I also agree that it is a little too forward and too dry for my taste. I would put some reverb on there and...

Hanging Ceiling Clouds as close as possible to the ceiling

I would use wire rope (or picture hanging wire would work too). That way you can trim it to the length you need, but will be very strong.

    Cheap alternative to SOUND ABSORPTION????

Absorption only controls reflections and reduces reverberation, and next to nothing for sound transmission (at least when used alone). Controlling sound traveling out is sound proofing, just not what many people think of when they hear the term. The two main rules of sound isolation are mass...

    What monitors do you use?

Been using a set of Event TR-8's for the last 6 or 7 years. Love them.

How Many Guitars do you own

I have a PRS CE 24, a Tacoma DM-9, and then a bunch that I have built. I have four ongoing builds right now: an LP '54 GT, a neck-through explorer, a multiscale strat, and a more traditional strat. I am also helping a friend build an SG and I need to build my daughter a 3/4 scale guitar for...

Audio Interface With 8 Line Ins??

I was going to recommend MOTU. I also think that RME has a model that has that, I believe the Fireface does.

I'm setting up my home studio but need help!

Focusrite makes great equipment. Also, look into making some sort of reflection filter (unless you have a really great room) to help eliminate room noise.

Dynamic lo/hi-pass filter... does it exist?

You could do it in theory, but there would have to be plenty of buffering to allow enough look ahead for the change to be implemented in time. Think of a bass playing lots of low notes, then sliding way up high. Also, distortion on a guitar introduces all kinds of high frequency content that...

Question about mixing and panning multiple vocal tracks

I don't sing, so I don't record the backing vocals myself. I made my recommendation if he does not have an extra track or the ability to easily get one. That's all. When I have recorded tracks with backing vocals in the past, I do record more than one part and use them. But sometimes, you...

Recording Drum Sounds with unspecific mics

The main reason for my suggestion is because if you use the 87 with one LDC for overheads, they will be really mismatched. You want the overheads to sound as similar as possible. That left the 87 to the kick, unfortunately. But, experiment and see what happens.

Question on Mixing Heavy Rhythms and the stereo spectrum

One technique that I keep coming back to is I record it twice. Then I clone each of those, so I have four tracks. One copy of each is panned hard left and right, but with the levels adjusted down on opposing sides, meaning guitar 1 is higher on the right than on the left and guitar 2 is the...

Question about mixing and panning multiple vocal tracks

If you only have one backing vocal, what I do sometimes is clone it, pan them left and right by some amount, then put a little bit of delay on one side (completely wet, so the whole signal is delayed). Several ms is plenty. Play around with it some.

Recording Drum Sounds with unspecific mics

Those are some nice mics, should be sufficient to record drums. If it were me, I would put the SM57 on the top side of the snare, beta 87 on the kick, the two large diaphragm condensers as overhead, and then the small one probably on the under side of the snare or between the two mid toms. You...

    The Dreaming...and the Damage Done

I would echo that the emotion is good, but that the drums and the vocal effects are the two big detractors for me. I would love the bass drum to be lower, and a good snare would work wonders for you. With the vocal effects, I love Pink Floyd as much as the next guy, maybe more, but I think you...

acoustic treatment for a 10x10x8 bedroom

If you can make up some decently sized gobos, you can interrupt the sound enough to help prevent some of the standing waves from forming. Also, take care with where your monitors are located in the room. A good exercise is to draw up your room and setup as a floor plan. Then use pencil to do...

Building DIY skyline diffusers but can't really figure out the heights

In case anyone else is looking for more general info now or in the future, those skyline diffusers and others like them are all based on the quadratic residue formula originally developed by Manfred Schroeder and commercialized by Peter D'Antonio. It is a basic equation that is based around the...

    Studio monitors

Looking used can be where it's at. A few years ago I bought a pair of Event TR-8's for $250 used, they retailed at that time for $250/ea. It's always worth taking a look, though make sure you don't go with anything that looks sketchy.

    Spend my money please :)

I am a fan of SE electronics and Studio Projects also makes good mics for vocals. For drums, you could look at a drum mic kit from CAD. The Studio Projects B1 or B3 are good budget vocal mics in my experience.

    New Mic Setup

The TC mics are supposed to be really great, though I have no idea what the three mic package costs. I would suggest definitely go with a d6 or similar, a great snare mic (sm57 or audix i5) and some great overheads (maybe a pair of shure sm81's or something). For toms, that is a harder...

advice on preamp an set up

First, I would audition your preamps from the console versus the ones in the firebox. Presonus preamps are right decent if you ask me. Of course, an outboard preamp can make a world of difference, but you most likely won't find one that beats your current ones by a lot for less than a couple...
