I would go with the DBX. they were the first in compressors if I'm not mistaken. I used a 266 for my front of house at a show last week and I was really impressed. finally a low cost compressor that really works. If you on a budget, its the way to go. Bill

Use your ear. If it sounds good to you then use it. We use them quite often for vocals depending on the voice. If they are good vocals and done in the right room, and mixed correctly, you can still get a high quality sounding recording even with 57's. Bill

Unless this is a special circumstance, I would try and eliminate AC hum all together before it gets to tape.

A good compressor is a must in my opinion and also a nice effects processor(s). High quality cabling.Dont skimp on the cheap items.Large diaphram mic is a good idea too. Bill

First i would make sure your input level is where you want it. If I remember correctly, the ART pre-amp has green , yellow, and red LEDS indicating in put signal. I would run it at the end of the warm(yellow). Avoid the red if possible.That should give you enough input signal. Adjust your output...
