I would say the difference is not noticeable when you are just standing there in the room listening. Maybe a little less harsh when the drummer is playing loud. But the real difference is when you listen through the mics. It sounds much better and cleaner.

I used Roxul mineral wool for everything and I got it from ATS Acoustics. The walls and the cloud are covered in red burlap. The whole project cost me about $130. I was on the fence about posting these songs when they aren't quite done yet. (we haven't recorded vocals yet) but here they are...

yes, get whatever you can to cut down on the harsh overtones from the cymbals. since it's a basement, you will get a lot of slapback echo. moving blankets will help. 703 fiberglass would be better.

if you really have to play loud, consider going to an audiologist and getting some custom ones made. they run about $120. they are great. before i got custom earplugs, i used a brand called Vader. also great stuff.

i'm not real familiar with the firebox, but if it has line-ins on the back, you would use those instead of the front inputs. the firebox is a preamp, but it's not as high quality as a dedicated preamp. I'm not an electrical engineer, so I can't really give you the details why, although higher...

maybe a nice preamp? the MAudio DMP2 or DMP3 are both great. made a world of difference in my acoustic recordings.
