    Recording Bass,using a compressor/gate

My advice is turn down the LF eq on your bass, or on your board. this will essentially give you a ton of headroom, cause it's the very LF signal that sends everything into the red. You won't be masking other sounds as much, you'll stand out more in the mix and it'll be much more even. Yes...

EQ Pre or Post Compression ??

My Eden bass amp (and my old Hartke bass amp) both had compression first, and then EQ. I've seen people suggest both ways, and I don't really know which is best for which situations...

    recording 2 guitars

Yeah, you really can't record that 2nd guitar later -- not the way you're doing it. You've got to mix something together (e.g., bass and 1st guitar) the first time around to free up a channel for the overdub of the 2nd guitar. Sounds like you need an 8 (or 6) track recorder. The good news is...

need help setting up a TASCAM 424II

there's a line out in the back of the djx, I believe, and so just plug a 1/4" cable into that, and then plug the other end into one of the 6 inputs (channels 1-4, or 5/6, or 7/8) on the Tascam. You could also go from the headphone amp, if you adjust the input level on the Tascam.

tascam 424 original vs. 424 mkII

Dragon used to have a review of the MKII which compared it in some detail with the original. It may sill be on the site somewhere, and if not, I'm sure he'd be happy to email it to you. The good news for you is that the prices of the 424MKII have dropped so much that you should just get that...

    basics of compressors, other help...

I recall that the manual is not too bad -- it gives suggested settings for most instruments, and explains how it works. Behringer also has a nice long manual (PDF) available at their website. What kinds of problems are you having getting a good sound? Distortion? fluctuating levels? Noise...

    Bass Effects

Effects (e.g., chorus) that are made for bass generally only process the higher frequencies so that you don't lose the low end during part of every sweep cycle. However, lots of people use standard guitar effects with no problem. If you're into a clean sound (i.e., not distorted metal/thrash)...

    bass question?

Play as many basses as you can and you'll learn what's important for you. I'll plug Peavey however, cause they're cheap, well made, and WAY underrated. Many of the models also have very fast and slim necks which are good for beginners. I used to play an old Peavey T-40 which weighed a million...

    EQ settings when recording

YES! As a bass player, I was always trying to get PUNCH by adding different frequencies, and finally figured out that removing low end rumble was much more effective in producing a nice sound -- both live and in the studio. It also helps me to keep my recording levels in check, because LF's...
