A "real world" application for recording over 96k is for adjusting tempos to match takes and sampling.
I've been doing this for over 20 years.
There are many better engineers than I who might not record that high and get amazing results. I haven't won a Grammy, but I have recorded Grammy...
Most people don't need or have the space or an 8" speaker. 5" are great. I have 2 pairs of Tannoys, Reveal 5. I liked them so much I purchased another set. They are the previous generation, so I can't say the quality of the newest. I use Adam A7 (not A7x) and whatever sub that goes along...
Even using a "bad" mic with a great pre sounds better than a bad mic with a mediocre pre.
I always use Millennia's even when using "bad" mics. My main mics are Schoeps, but since they capture everything (including extraneous squeaks, unwanted breath or valves noises), I use Oktavas on less...
Can you use a MOSFET as a power supply line enough to fully power a tube? I wonder if that would change the tone? (yeah, i know it isn't in the signal path, but i've heard that with 500 series you should really stick with the power supply intended with since using a different companies power...
I wouldn't call it a "non-effective design trick" if you're trying to go for that effect, but that is not how low end tube pre's are marketed. They push them as "regular" tube pres, but it's a little deceptive since they are not educating the buyers. Saying that its "cheap" is correct though...
I forgot to add my vocal tracks. I've included them with the dropbox.
I should mention that I recorded at 2496 (some people will laugh at the 96....). I rendered down to 1644 without dithering (again, some might laugh at that again). I use Reaper.
I didn't see anyone mentioning that the MPA II is a "starved plate" tube design - there isn't enough power going to the tubes as a preamplifier. To be blunt, that tube circuit is only to add noise from those poor starving tubes. Some guys use just it without the tube stage and are happy with...

Here is the dropbox with wav and pictures of the room.
My experience with this "experiment" were interesting. I like practicing in this room, and I hear myself quite well. Mixing is also good. Recording in this room... not so good. It's...
OK, back now and burnt. I hate flying - I'm 2 meters tall (6'7"). I need a couple days for my ears to reset. If I don't my mixes are shrilly. Same thing happens when I have to drive to a location over a couple hours and mix onsite. Hopefully vids and wavs or FLACs by Wednesday.
You always have such good and thought provoking questions, grim.
Lyrics always have an influence on the listener. How lyrics manifest themselves in a person is varied depending on herd theory or "isolated" individuals though.
When I was younger, I went to many different conferences and...
I wanted to give an update... in Hawaii right now. Last week was absolutely horrible for my family and I wasn't able to get any work done, which included all recording work. I'm sorry about that - I do my best to do what I say. It will be done when I get back (after I take care of the messy...
Excellent. Thanks for the guide.
Yeah, I'll go check your concert bands/orchestra thread when I have a moment....
The kid is staying with the grandparents! A whole week without the munchkin! This will be a first. My wife and I have only had 1 night away without him since he was born. And...
You, of course, have heard the Pachelbel Rant right? Pachelbel Rant - YouTube
But a chord progression isn't really a subject matter... or it is anyone singing about Pachelbel?!?
I'm recording my easy arrangement of Linus and Lucy for my guitar ensembles this week. It will probably be in my small mixing room (which is "treated with some bass traps and diffusers," so hopefully it will be like yours). It sounds good, but I've never recorded in there so it will be a good...
That's right. Logic is Space Designer...
I need to find a great surround reverb - and I'm cool with a convolution if it's available, but usually I don't have time to make an impulse response in the spaces I record to be of any use (though I could probably find a use).
You've got some good...
