Recording keeps cutting out in Cubase...might need a new preamp

TL;DR: Bought a VTB-1 preamp in 2007, need to replace it, looking for suggestions on what to replace it with :) Back in 2007, I bought the hardware for my studio, which consisted of a VTB-1 preamp, a CAD M177 microphone, and an M-Audio Audiophile 2496 soundcard. Fast forward to 2014, my 7 year...

Using a VSTi without having to make 5+ copies of it

I'll admit, I'm an absolute noob when it comes to Cubase, and I'm sure there's SO much that I'm missing out on in this program just by being uneducated. But, I get by for the most part. There's only one thing I was wondering, and my apologies of it's blatantly simple. For example, say I want...

    VTB-1 Insane Input, No Output

Having a bit of a problem with my VTB-1 preamp. My mic works fine, but not so much for the line in. I plug my guitar in, start chunking away, and the input is constantly breaking the +8db barrier, even though the input gain is turned down to zero! Then, with the output, even if I crank it up to...

Funky little original needs mixing advice

Thanks! Yeah, the kick definitely needed a bit of a boost, so I fixed that up. Still working on the solo. Got it sounding a bit fuller though.

Funky little original needs mixing advice

http://boomp3.com/m/9b267e590d96 My first real attempt at a semi-decent recording. Well, the only thing "recorded" is the vocals. The guitar tone was created with me lining in my guitar and using an amp simulator, and the rest is VST. I'm fairly happy with how it came out, but I thought I'd...

Wicked! Certainly gives the original a run for its money. What's your setup?

I understand the card isn't really made for recording, and I know there's a huge difference between sound cards and audio cards, but the Inferno seems to suit my needs well enough. Still, I think I'm going to have to lean towards the VTB-1. Would this be the best choice for my situation?

Thanks for all the replies, guys! I've looked into every suggestion that was made, and figured the best mic option for me would be the CAD M177. However, I'm kind of torn between the VTB-1 and the Joe Meek 3Q. From what I've read the VTB-1 is an excellent dedicated preamp, but as a DI for guitar...

(Sorry for the underscores, by the way. For some reason it wouldn't let me post the topic if there were spaces in the title) I recently bought myself a copy of Cubase SX, and I've found with my Edirol PCR-M30 Midi Controller and a slew of VST instruments and effects, I can get a pretty...
