Weirdest thing. After trying the program about 20 times last night and confirming soundcard function in a different program. Today after starting the program the cards mysteriously appear. It wouldn't seem too weird, but I didn't reboot. Just left the computer on... hmmm
Thanks for the tip...
condenser is better for clear vocals, but considerably more expensive.
most 1/4" outputs are line level and can be plugged into a line in (eg line-out from guitar amp, line out from acoustic with preamp built in, line-out from keyboard...).
If you just need one or two channels a preamp is...
Trying out Sonar, but can’t get it to work for me. Upon opening program I get:
Audio Driver Error: The following driver(s) either do not support the current audio format or are in use by another application… It then lists whatever drivers I have enabled.
Once the program has started I have...
yeah, you can get some jacked up noise sounds with phantom power on, better to leave it off unless you need it.
FYI dynamic mics don't need phantom power on. If you're not sure what kind you have (and it doesn't say on the side of the mic), typically condensor mics are long and thin (eg the...
If it plays in your cd player it is wav file, if you have to play it on your computer it is mp3 files. If it is wav you might have a little harder time with the editing...

there's a search function on this bbs. Search through the newbie and soundcard sections. You'll get lots of great info. Once you've digested a fair bit of that, post again giving lots of details as to what you want to use your recording set up for.

Depending on how old your son is, I would definately get his input.
He probably has some what of an idea what he wants. If he doesn't know what he wants, make sure you find out what all he plans on using it for. You guys can make it a team project to spec it out together.
have fun,

I think it's supply and demand. Put up your shingle and see if anyone comes knocking. I'd consider it a bargin to use ANY recording set up at that price, especially if it comes with someone (you?) to run the boards.
If you want a feel of what your set up can bring in start visiting all the...
The Event Echos (Layla and Mona) now come with PCMCIA card adapters that would allow you to record from your laptop.
Of course you might end up paying about a grand for the settup.

In addition this site has some good recording from laptop...
My opinion (based on reading, not hearing), is that the Aardvark 24/96 is the best option for a preamp/soundcard combo. But, because the w2k drivers are reportedly pretty bad and because I use a dual processor machine; I decided to go with a stand alone soundcard (lynxone) and a standalone...
To answer your original question. No you don’t need a mixer (although it would work). To complete your system you would need a preamp to boost the mic levels to line levels as previously explained.
For a basic 2 channel preamp go with the Midiman Audio Buddy for $69. For better quality...
Just found this thread and I look forward to reading it in full. I have written a few Christian based tunes. Just don't tell Royston :)
Hope to share some MP3s when I get my recording system running smooth.

As Gidge mentioned you need a preamp to record vocals (to boost the mic level signal to line level). Therefore just because a card has a XLR input, don't assume it has a preamp and you can hook your mic straight into it.
Cards that do have preamps include the Aardvark direct pro 24/96 (around...
The Joe Meek VC3Q does look nice especially since I really only need one mic channel at a time.
Bayview has a street price of $199 which isn't too much more than $69. I guess I'll just be patient and hold out for the Meek.
I guess the VC3Q adds the equalizer feature over the previous model...
