Thanks sjjohnston,
That's exactly what I needed to know. I figured I probably didn't NEED to buy another preamp to accomplish this task. I guess I just need to find an AD converter. Yeah, I see this functionality built into sound cards, but again... I don't need a soundcard - I have the...
Hey all... this may be a dumb question for some - I want to be able to use all 6 inputs on my Firebox. What do I need to get the signal from the mic into the S/PDIF ins on the the Firebox?
I imagine there's some kind of an converter box, preamp, or something? I can plug the mics into my...
here's a link to Apple's comparison chart. It's really helpful:

Pro has more plugins... does anyone know if you can get the Pro plugins for Express? I haven't really looked into it... but 7.2 Pro has an autotune plugin, and a guitar amp...
well, I'd say it's certianly good enough for a demo... with songs like these, I'm a firm believer in having that kick and snare WAY up in the mix. I'd back the guitars down, and get the drums up near the vocal level. It sounds like there's a lot of tom work going on in the drums in the verses...
I have a friend that has a snare tuning technique that I thought was weird at first, but totally works.
He loosens the batter head until it's barely hanging on... NO ring at all.. really 'flappy' sounding. And when you hit it, it sounds like ass. BUT, it fits in the mix really nicely. I...
you gotta have a decent mic. in fact, if you run your crappy mic through a good pre-amp, it might highlight the crappiness of your mic. :) I bought a MCA SP1 from Musicians Friend for like $50 a few years back, and it was a BIG jump over the crappy $50 Shure dynamic mic that I bought a long...
cool tune... I think the vocal on the chorus "I don't like what I see..." might be a little loud, and thr 2nd verse vocal might be a little too quiet. Overall a good mix... good singing, too.
The new MacBooks come with iLife '06 - which has the latest GarageBand bundled with it. It's actually pretty good for a bundled piece of software. It's built on the Logic engine and if you like it - you can get Logic Express and seamlessly import your GarageBand projects into it.
I've been...
When I was recording to a PC (I'm using a Mac these days), I was using a Firepod. If your PC already doesn't have Firewire, you'll need to get a PCI Firewire card. I was able to get all 8 tracks into the computer with no hiccups.
I've gotten good results from the Firepod. If you don't want...
I would have posted this in the "Logic Audio" specific forum, but it doesn't seem to exist... so I stuck it here... please move this to it's appropriate place.
Anyway, this problem may not be specific to Logic... I seem to get some bleed of the click-track into the track. Now, I'm not...
I don't know how your MXL compares, but I just bought a Rode NT1a, and it's made my vocals sound much better. I was using an MCA SP1 - it was a big improvment. It was 200 plus tax. You could get that, and a ART TubePac for about 300.
I just bought an NT1a. I like it a lot. Here's a review that highlights a few slight differences between the two mics.

I like it, but it reminds me of that Terminex commercial with the people's faces that are in the walls. you know... "if you're house could talk, it would tell you that you're infested with termites."
However, that commercial will be forgotten about in a matter of weeks, but hopefully your...
I voted 'music first' because that's how it usually goes. Sometimes I pick up the acoustic and come up with a chord progression, and sometimes I get an idea for a song (usually a main chorus lyric hook), and I see what fits with the chord progressions I have been working on - and/or I'll modify...
oh.. yeah, no... the top recording is the only one I was actually trying to get to sound good... the others are just crap that I did to be stupid - I have no fear. the top one is probably far too noisy, too. I'm just trying to get the cleanest signal into the computer as possible... which...
Amen. I think some of my first guitar gigs I played I was using some crappy handheld tuner... I was always out of tune, and it was such a hassle to use. I think I bought some lame-o Danelectro tuner to "fix" the situation, and that might have even been worse. I broke down and paid the 85...
I did do a quick A/B/Cing of the 3, and thought the Fostex board and the ART were both pretty full sounding. I thought recording directly into the Firebox was kind of dark sounding. I should probably be a little more thurough with my testing, though. I thought I would post this to get...
It's funny you say that, I thought Presonus had the least appealing sound. Maybe a need a better mic. I'm currently using one of those $50 MXL vocal condenser mics.
I gotta say though, I was recording using a Tascam US122, and the upgrade to the Firebox has been well worth it.
Here's a...
I got some used gear recently and I'm recording some stuff at home... I'm trying to figure out which devices have the best sounding preamps. I got a Fostex 450 8ch mixer (from the 80s), an ART TubePac preamp/compressor, and a Presonus Firebox. I've read some good reviews on the TubePac, the...
