That 545SD is a real score. I have one and I love it. I've recorded blues harp through it. In my opinion it is a better mic than the SM57. At least it has it's own unique vintage sound. A real Rock and Roll microphone. They usually go a lot higher than the 57 so you did good.
Used mics with...
wretchasketch,
The 1070Ds always command a premium because of the magic word Shure on the mic. The 1070B, and C are sonically identical. I had a 1070A, it was Taiwanese, not Mexican and had reverse polarity. There is also an unlettered 1070 but I never bought one and they aren't seen often. The...
Tom,
As you say the AKG dynamics provide fantastic bang for buck. I have 2 D120s I carry with me all the time. When I got my first one I thought it was light and cheap so I did an A/B comparison with my Beyer Soundstar and I really couldn't tell the difference. Here's my inventory sheet on AKG...
flawrence,
The Audio Technica Pro 37s are really good on acoustic guitar and you can probably get a pair in your price range. Also great drum overheads.
Thanks,
Hairy Larry
Hi,
I also have an SM57 and two AKG D690s. Don't get me wrong. I like my 57. But I use the 690s more.
Part of that may be because I also have an SM56 and a 545sd, pre 57 undidynes that I love. But I use my 690s more than them to. And don't let me get started about my D770s. They stay in my kit...
This name is taken,
What are you recording into? A computer? A deck? What is your interface? It's hard to make mic recommendations without knowing this.
What mics are better that the SM7b? None. I can say this with confidence without ever owning or using one. What mics are cheaper? Many. And...
bassbrad,
We used three Peavey CD20 Celebrity mics for our front line vocals mics at Blues Fest for years. They've lost their foam now.
The Peavey mic I really like is the 520i, good for bass and horns as well as a really good dynamic vocals mic. It's more of a hundred dollar mic than a fifty...
Yeah, it kind of blew my mind. I had been doing some announcements over it and it sounded good. Then when I started singing I went wow! Since it fits in the little case with my mixer that's where it's staying. A very solid feeling mic that also sounds good.
Thanks,
Hairy Larry
25 dollar mic subthread
Hi,
This is pretty weird. I thought $50 was cheap for a good usable microphone. More and more are showing up for around $20. Behringer XM8500?? Who would have thought? But I know that moresound and Richard both know what they're talking about even though I haven't yet...
Ev pl9
Hi,
These mics are hard to find and they usually go closer to $100 but I just got my second one in the range. I now have a pair for just under $110 total (when I receive my shipment).
Still they are fantastic pro mics even at the $100 price and it is possible to get them closer to...
Hi,
I just got my second PL9 so I'm really ready to give them a workout doing some field recording this Fall.
I have been using my secret weapon omni dynamics for recording bands outside, the Realistic 1070b (or c or d), RE50 clones made by Shure for Radio Shack. But I will soon have a pair of...
RobbieL,
I like the Audio Technica Pro 37. (37r is the same mic) These are SDCs that look similar to the ones you have. They have fantastic high end detail. Cymbals sound great recorded with them.
Looks like $120 at Sweetwater.
These mics also excel at acoustic guitar.
Thanks,
Hairy Larry
slimbob,
I watched the third video. The first two said private.
I could hear the rustling of the clothes. That would probably be less with a dynamic lav mic like the EV 649b. I think you could address this with the mic you have with more careful mic placement and possibly tape like you...
