    The "I can't sing" people!

I have a professional diagnosis that I can't sing. Quite a few years ago I was at an after-show party chatting to the Musical Director (who also did singing lessons when things got slow. She boasted "I can teach anyone to sing" so I said "Yeah? What about me?". So, it was set up that I'd...

Can't Make Mic Work (Slowly Losing my Mind)

Just for the sake of trying everything, have you gone to the Windows Audio Control panel and made sure your socket is selected as the default source and then go to your sound software confirm the source setting there. As I say, worth looking at if only to eliminate those possible errors. I'm...

Is there any use for testing mixes on speakers anymore?

Thing is, "high end systems" in a home studio doesn't mean something that makes your recordings sound good. Much more important in the studio is monitoring which gives you your recordings as accurately as possible--warts and all. When you get a mix to sound good on very neutral speakers, it...

Is there any use for testing mixes on speakers anymore?

Simples. If you mix on decent monitors in a room with good acoustics, the finished product should sound good on any system. If you mix on earbuds you can get things sounding fine there but they will likely show problems on other types of headphone, car speakers, etc. etc.

Volume problem (electric guitar recording with dynamic microphone)

I'm afraid one thing to check is whether your SM58 is genuine. it's likely the most faked mi around. If you go to the Shure site there's a section to help you check if you have the real thing.

Best laptop for everyday use and music production

I've owned laptops by Toshiba, HP, and Acer--all have been okay but gradually developed problems. However, I'm now on my third Lenovo and they've all performed flawlessly (the reason I'm on my third was that I was able to justify new machines for me by giving the old ones to family!). One...

Why are equalizers and mixers still used

The answer is mainly personal preference, but... For much of what I do I still use a mixer (in my case a digital one). There are two or three reasons I like to work this way. First, when using multiple mics it's quick and easy to set levels using 100mm pro faders than on small, closely spaced...

    Wireless tracking headphones?

The HD280s are excellent headphones for the money and provide decent isolation. To be honest to get better levels/isolation you're probably looking at something like the Sony 7506--loud but I prefer the Sennheiser sound. One idea for things like guitars where the cables can interfere with each...

How long before someone talks to you on this site?

I thought things were getting a bit quiet. Ah, well, I'm getting better night's sleep than when people were talking to me!

Problem with cool edit pro Playback

From memory, CEP2 doesn't support ASIO drivers...and ASIO is required for the latency compensation.

    OTB Mixing confusion

At the risk of starting an argument, unless you have the budget to mix OTB properly (which would involve an interface (D to A) that could output all tracks at the same time) plus a mixer of suitable size, I'd strongly recommend sticking to ITB for now. I'm pretty sure you'll get better results...

is duplicating a track a good way to make the sound fuller?

If you simply duplicate a track, playing both at once makes no difference at all other than being slightly louder. However, there are various things you can do that will alter the sound...for example, delay one track very slightly to add some phase differences (often used to simulate a stereo...

Is there an audible difference between a $2000 and $200 audio interface?

Yes there will be a slight difference between a $200 and $2000 interface but it will likely be subtle. As others have said, you’ll get far more dramatic changes with a new mic (and changed mic positions and techniques), acoustic treatment of your room—and likely better monitoring. If I had...

How to record one track on all 4 tracks using a portastudio

Thing is, the head layout is such that you get 4 thin tracks at record and a choice of the same 4 tracks when you record--not one wider track. If you have golden ears and hundreds of thousands in monitoring, there MIGHT be an argument that the centre tracks are better than the ones nearer the...

    Issues with recording quality

My ears are 65 years old and start to roll off at about 14K these days. Based on that, you'd think I would prefer the brighter recording but I don't! Not that it matters but all my monitors (other than the headphones) are 34 years old so you can say I know the sound rather well!

    Alesis mixer

Yes it will. Two things to be aware of though. First, the USB output is only 2 channels (the main stereo output), not the individual tracks. Second, it uses the existing audio drivers on your operating system rather than dedicated ASIO ones. This could well give too much latency if you try...

    Issues with recording quality

You know what most of the comments so far prove? It's that differences in monitoring and differences in preferences make a huge difference and there no single correct sound!

    Issues with recording quality

That's a fairly dramatic difference but it may be down to the mics themselves. The TLM 103 is known to have a much brighter top end than the 102. Some people like the 103 sound but others (myself included) find it so bright as to be almost harsh. This is certainly the difference I heard on my...

Audio & Mix Engineers Wanted for Uni Project

Okay...I'll give it a try. I've emailed the link on the briefing document.

Audio & Mix Engineers Wanted for Uni Project

Being old, boring and retired I'm probably happy to help (and don't worry about the money--take your mates out for a pub night). However, a couple of things: First off, what musical style will it be? I'm comfortable with lots of things but have to admit that modern dance/house/hiphop etc. is...
